The  big   event of  Watermelon  Day in Vining is  coming  up  on August  17.

It is  an  activity filled  day with  lots of   food,  music,  vendors,   free watermelon, parade  and a great opportunity to  have  a fun filled day in a small welcoming village.

Organizers are inviting the public to include a visit  to  the  Vining Community History Center located  on the second  floor  of the Community Center building. This endeavor to collect  history and artifacts of  past days, was begun just 20 years ago in 2005  with many  of the  original  organizers no longer living. History center volunteers are pleased to display their proud heritage of the village, their early  business, schools, churches, etc.

Volunteers have obtained a number of   extensive  family history collections donated by individuals. Of course,  the museum features some of the trips to space from astronaut, Karen Nyberg has on display. Her  talented  father, Ken Nyberg, has a  display  of an elevator and a feed mill  built to scale.

This recent year, Norah Froslee undertook a project that  qualified her to win a prestigious award  in  American Heritage Girls Stars and Stripes Organization. As a result the history center has freshly painted  walls, a  new display area and new lighting which  enhances the  upper hallway between the rooms used for displays.

The Vining Community History Center will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.    Summer hours are  Friday’s from l-4 p.m. It is also open  by appointment by contacting Wendy Grabow at (218) 367-3240 or Janice Saetre at (218) 548-5001.
