Barry Olson wasn’t necessarily looking for another superintendent job, but the position of Henning School Superintendent Barry Olson just kind of found him. The longtime Blooming Prairie School Superintendent joined the Henning School staff on July 1 on a one-year interim basis.

After welcoming guests to Chippewa Island for nearly 30 years, a sign near the intersection of 220th Street and Chippewa Road in rural Vining got a second chance at life. Recently, Bob Fritz took down the sign that was originally constructed by Paulson Land Company and Milt Paulson, and gave the sign a fresh coat of paint. It was a project he had been thinking about completing for several years.

The COVID-19 pandemic may have taken down most of the summer festivals, but coronavirus is no match for the heart of an otter. On Saturday, the Ottertail Business and Community Association will be hosting a slimmed down version of OtterFest. While the parade, demo derby, kids games and a number of other events have been canceled, OTBCA President Ron Grobeck said the organization felt it was important to have a summer celebration for local residents and tourists.

Visitors to Henning will notice the new sign, now in place at the Highway 210 entrance to town. The sign was bought by the Chamber of Commerce with added funds from the City of Henning and Henning Lions Club.

Hail covered much of the area around town during last Tuesday afternoon’s thunderstorm. Many vehicles received hail damage. These pieces of hail were found outside of the Advocate building just after the storm. One of the pieces measured at over an inch and a half in length.

Arvig Communications System is already well known in the Henning, Vining and Ottertail area, providing cable service for many years as Tekstar Cable and most recently branching into the phone service industry. ACS has announced that it will be expanding its presence in the area with a retail office in downtown Henning.

4-Hers from all over the world, from Japan to Norway to the United States, know one thing. 4-H may take on different forms in each county, but the basic values and skills learned through the program are the same. Two local families found that out last month as they hosted 4-H exchange students from Finland. Hanne Rantanan of Rauma and Hannes Jantunen of Hartola, both 17 years old, stayed with the Jim Reineke and Gregg Mallory families for a month.

Construction began Monday on the “much sought after” road west of Henning, which will extend from the one mile corner nearly to the Butcher Corner. Work is being done by the Diesleth Construction Company and considerable dirt has already been moved at the far end of the road.

It has been announced that this year during the festival there will be a magician. The magician is slated to give two free shows during the festivities. He will be in town August 21 and 22.

Henning businessmen and the Henning high school band plan to go to Wadena Aug. 3 to assist in the parade. Henning participation will in a small way help to show appreciation for the fine spirit evidence by the Wadena organizations in our festival celebration last year. Everyone able to go should see Martin Dusa for instruction and time.

An electric steam radiator is one of the latest developments in modern heating of the home. The heating elements extends through the radiator in a protective seamless brass tube, which assures even heat in every column and provides a large radiating surface for heating the water surrounding it in the same vicinity.

Fishing in the lakes here is not what it formally was, according to J. H. Jones, who is probably the oldest game warden in Minnesota in point of service. Mr. Jones made an extended tour of the lake region one day last week and says he saw only one boat out fishing in a visit to quite a number of lakes. The fish were not biting, and fishermen had become discouraged.

Our gravel roads would be much better if the driving public used more of the driving surface. Often when you find a washboard condition in the main traveled track, if you will just drive over a foot or two you will be surprised to find how much better the going is. The general idea of drivers seems to be hit the one track.
