Former Henning Giants manager and long-time baseball enthusiast Tony Kawlewski will officially have Henning’s new baseball field dedicated in his honor on Friday night. For much of the 1980s and ‘90s, Kawlewski maintained the baseball field, tracked down umpires, sold preseason tickets to games, lined up players and even managed the team for a short time. He was also instrumental in bringing back the Henning Giants.

As of July 17, 28 states and Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico require face coverings. Minnesota joined that list as of midnight on Saturday, July 25. The announcement of executive order 20-81was made during a press conference by Gov. Tim Walz on Wednesday, July 22.

Henning High School seniors and their dates took a walk in their formal attire, and in some cases shorts and a T-shirt, at their senior prom on Saturday night. The grand march was held at the Tom and Jeannie Grasswick farm in rural Deer Creek, while the Vining Palace hosted a formal dinner and a dance was held at the Vining Community Center. Henning’s prom was postponed this spring due to COVID-19 and officially canceled in June.

With the weather cooperating and a large crowd attending, the Henning Fly-In was fun for all. Besides the breakfast and the chance to step inside many different types of aircraft, visitors were given the chance to take a ride in the sky with one of the many pilots who attended from several area states.

A 55-year old retired State Trooper was killed Sunday when he was struck by a car. Fred Peterson and his wife were bicycling on County Road 111 near Fergus Falls. A 26-year old woman hit Peterson when he moved to the center of road to make a left turn. Peterson died at Lake Region Hospital, while his wife and the driver were not hurt. DWI charges are pending against the driver, who has been arrested in DWI charges before.

A review of the Harvest Festival was presented at the regular meeting of the Henning Commercial Club Monday night at the Oakwood Golf Club. With most of the receipts and disbursements settled, the festival promotion showed a deficit of approximately $240. This is considered very good compared to some past festivals.

A serious infestation of army worms was discovered during the weekend and early this week, causing concern among the affected farmers. The army worms are capable of causing much damage to grasses, small grain and corn.

Approximately 250 seven-week old pheasants were released in the Henning community this week, with about 100 slated in Ottertail. Twelve crates arrived here and distributed on suitable farm lands in the area. The distribution was supervised by Game Warden O.B. Olson. The pheasants were obtained from a state game farm. Scheduled for release very soon are nearly 500 more chicks which are being raised thru efforts of the Henning Rod and Gun Club. The day old chicken were received here June 3 and raised by Geo. Eckhoff with remarkably small loss, according to Vern Smith, Rod and Gun Club president.

Accidents fatal to three people occurred in the Henning community this past week. Two died as result of a collision between two cars at the junction of Highways 3 and 29, six miles east of Henning and the third, a child, was fatally injured on a Clitherall street when struck by a car. The Deer Creek residents and one youth from the Clitherall area were killed in fatal accidents.

A public hearing on the proposed blacktopping of Henning streets has been set for July 28 at the village hall. The bituminous treatment for about 13 blocks in the heart of the village, has been approved by the council and the hearing is open to all parties interested in this major improvement.

I wish to impress on property owners in this village the necessity of cutting weeds on their property, in order to comply with the weed law. If not cut within a short time the weed inspector will see that it is done, and the costs of same assessed against the property. Anton Belmont, Mayor.

Cream thieves visited this locality one evening last week and according to reports made quite a haul. They invaded Hewitt, Inman and some parts of Leaf Lakes, and carried off cans and cream at the following reported places: Frank Eastland, John Husfelt, William Brinkman, Mr. East, Lew Scheafert and Richard Tervola.

Local constables raid distillery at Rush Lake; Walter Menze arrested. J.W. Wilson and Clarence Carter of this place, drove up to Ottertail Saturday and arrested Walter Menze on a charge of distilling and bootlegging. They had previously located the distillery, which was a large one located in a dugout 9×2 in a lonely spot on the South Shore of Rush Lake. In the room they found eight barrels of mash ready to be converted into “moon.”

They set fire to the roof, which resulted in the destruction of about 100 lbs. of sugar, mash and illegal paraphernalia. Mr. Menze was allowed to plead guilty of maintaining a nuisance, there being no finished product. He was given a 60 day jail sentence which he started to serve at once.
