Jacob Menze hands out a treat to one of the guests at his surprise tractor parade on his 12th birthday on Saturday. The rural Ottertail resident is the son of Mike and Denise Menze.
The iconic purple bar/restaurant in the town of Vining, population 78, is one of the most recognizable buildings along Highway 210. Not only has the business become known for its bright exterior, but for the tasty broasted chicken inside. And now, for the first time since Glenn and Helen Whiting opened the establishment in 1970, the famous Vining Palace and its purple exterior is no longer in the Whiting name. Jason and Kaari Speer, along with Justin and Chelsea Speer, purchased the Vining Palace from the Whiting family on Feb. 14.
The Henning H-545 Foundation is nearly 1/3 of the way to its goal of raising $50,000 in 2020. The goal was sparked by a challenge from an anonymous donor in late 2019 that would match dollar-for-dollar all of the money raised by the H-545 Foundation in 2020. The match includes all of the money the foundation raises up to $50,000.

With the $48,000 in grant money that has been appropriated for Henning, local kids like Maddie Ellenson, Sadie Ellenson, and Kendall Bjorklund (pictured on slide) will have new equipment to play on each summer. The receipt of grant funds from the DNR is expected next spring after final budgeting is done by state legislators.
A popular event at the 1996 All School Reunion was the Silent Auction, which featured a variety of items from original paintings, sculptures and crafts to antique collectibles and bricks from the “old school.” Dollars for Scholars will again be hosting a Silent Auction during Reunion 2000, June 22-25.
Hoot’s Cathouse & Marine, located on Highway 108 in Ottertail, has been sold to Randy and Janet Schoephoerster. The couple took ownership on Thursday, June 1, according to an employee at Hoot’s Marine.

Fifteen county 4-H clubs and five dairy princess candidates will be in Henning Saturday for the fourth annual 4-H Field Day and Otter Tail County Dairy Princess Contest. Five princesses from the surrounding areas will be vying for the county title.
The first hold in one of the season was reported to have occurred Sunday at the Balmoral Golf Course. Ernest Berne of New York Mills made the shot on the number two hole using a seven iron.

A science film will be shown this coming week. Chickens laying their eggs on the bottom of the ocean would be – well, unbelievable. But these silvery grunion, a small fish of the Smelt family, flop out of the ocean up to the beaches to lay their eggs in the sand, and then flop out to the sea again. It’s been proved with actual color photographs in “Dastor Destiny,” a new scientific film produced by Moody Bible Institute. The film will be shown in he Henning Baptist Church Saturday, June 3rd, at 8 p.m.
40 seniors will receive their diplomas Friday. Mr. Gordon A. Mork, chairman of the division of education, Bemidji – State Teachers College, will deliver the commencement address. Lenora Dreyer will deliver the Salutatory and Lorne Meyer, the Valedictorian speech.
One of the best school attendance records of all time in the state of Minnesota was made by a local high school senior, Alvin Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Anderson of Inman Township. Alvina had a perfect attendance for all 12 years of her Henning school career.

Sixteen graduates, one of the largest number of graduates from the Henning Schools, received their diplomas last Friday evening at the commencement exercises at the city hall.
The hottest Memorial Day in the history of Minnesota was witnessed here last Friday. Many folks sought refuge around the lakes.
A small fire which caused considerable damage occurred at Deer Creek Thursday at 10:30 p.m. Smoke was found coming from the Harness and shoe repair shop of R. A. Horner. The fire boys responded quickly, and the stock and interior was put out. Defective wiring is supposed to be the cause of the trouble.
Under the direction of Alexandria Commercial Club, sixty cans of Pike fry were planted in lakes near and around the area, stretching from Alex to about the Henning area.
