The Ottertail City Council held their regular monthly meeting for May in-person and virtually, with those in attendance at the city hall practicing social distancing. At the meeting, the council took various steps to provide help to Ottertail businesses. These measures included the council passing a motion to give Ottertail businesses up to $250 off their water bill for the months of May and June. Depending upon the status of businesses openings come July, the council will revisit and potentially extend this assistance if needed.
The never-ending flow of watermelon will have to wait at least one more year to make a return to Vining. With the coronavirus not showing signs of slowing down, several area festivals have officially been canceled for this summer, including Watermelon Day in Vining. The celebration was canceled after Governor Tim Walz expressed hesitation in lifting an executive order to limit social gatherings to 10-20 people due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Minnesota State Fair, as well as Wadena June Jubilee, Wadena County Fair, Deer Trails Day in Deer Creek and Parkers Prairie Fall Festival in August have also been canceled.
