Members of the Henning girls basketball team were all smiles after they defeated West Central Area 56-50 in the Section 6A finals at the University of Minnesota-Morris on Friday. With the win the Hornets have qualified for their first-ever state basketball tournament. The Hornets enter the state tournament with a record of 28-2 on the season and received the third seed at state. They will take on unseeded Fillmore Central on Thursday at Maturi Pavilion.

Questions surrounding a Feb. 19 work session that was advertised as a special city council meeting, as well as a projected budget deficit in several utility department funds, resulted in some lively discussion from the public and city council last week. During its regularly scheduled meeting last Monday night, Henning Mayor Darren Wiese expressed his displeasure with the idea that voting took place at the work session last month. He said having a work session to discuss the utilities was brought forth by another council member with the idea that the council would only discuss the topics and not vote.

For some local residents, pouring a bowl of cereal, or having vegetables to serve with supper, isn’t as easy as simply opening up the pantry and grabbing the item from the shelf. While the pantry doors may open, the shelves may be bare and the prospect of simply going to the grocery store to buy the item is more easily said than done.

Enjoy it while it lasts… taking in high temps this weekend were Lindsey Anderson and Kacie Campbell who joined many walkers, joggers and rollerbladers. Temps continued to rise into Tuesday, when reported highs in the 70s occurred. Winter storm warnings were issued, however, for Wednesday for 6 inches of snow.

The Ottertail Rod and Gun Club pitched in Saturday to assemble 185 wood such houses. Tim Lueders and Jim Sutherland worked alongside 15 other members of the club who gathered at Bert Winger’s home.

As part of Dr. Seuss’ birthday celebration at Henning School, kids and area residents sampled some green eggs and ham. Enjoying the school breakfast were Vivian Palm, Josh Coyle and Mike Uhren. Adults also came into the school to read for different classes in order to encourage them to pick up a book and read every day.

Several members of the Wadena A.F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge No. 156 were on hand Saturday afternoon to present a 50 year membership pin to Julius Johnson, a resident of the Otter Tail County Nursing Home and a former Henning businessman. Also on hand was Johnson’s wife, Ruth, who will receive her 50 year pin in 1976 from the Eastern Star Chapter No. 155 of Wadena.

Minor injuries were sustained by the driver and two passengers in a car that left a county road near Henning early last Thursday morning, according to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department. The car was reportedly attempting to elude the Henning police patrol car and went out of control on County Road 65 one-fourth mile south of Henning at about 12:05 a.m. Thursday. Damage to the vehicle, which rolled several times after entering the ditch, was estimated at $1,500. The driver of the car, Bruce Wark, of rural Henning, and two passengers, Alvin Schultz and Allen Stamp, were taken to the Henning Clinic where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

A bad fire broke out at the Bill Dreyer farm north of Ottertail Thursday morning at 10:45 with damages estimated at about $3,000. The tractor had just been put in the shed a short while before the blaze was discovered. Destroyed was the building, tractor, tools, two brood sows and 11 little pigs that were also in the shed. The Ottertail Fire Department responded to the call for help. It was thought that either the stove or tractor was responsible for the fire. Some insurance was carried.

Ed Barnard, president of the Otter Tail County Historical Society, was in town Monday and announced that work on the historical monument west of Ottertail village would be started as soon as the frost is out of the ground. This historic spot will be dedicated some time this summer.

Friday’s victory was the boys 17th straight, and a small sized crowd watched the boys play their last home game together under the Black and Orange. The scrappy Mills bunch found themselves first opposed by the second team and the seconds showed marked improvements over Monday nights disappointing showing, defeating Mills in the first quarter 8-0. However, in order to gain “a point a minute” average coach Culbert sent the first team for the next two quarters. They piled up a total of 41 points to their opponents 2 in the 16 minutes of play. The last quarter the seconds went in, and most of them, if not all, thought they were playing for Mills. Henning won, 51-6.

The state senate unanimously passed the anti-swearing bill. Under the terms of the measure fathered by Senators R. C. Sletten of Willmar and N. A. Pederson of Milan, it’s against the law to swear or use obscene language on the highways of Minnesota “in the presence of others.” The bill now goes to the house.
