Henning receives third seed in sub section tournament

The Henning Hornets received the third seed in a loaded sub section tournament and will open their sub section playoffs on Thursday night against either sixth seeded Underwood or 11th seeded Battle Lake. The Hornets, who are ranked fourth in the state, will put their 23-3 record against either the Rockets, who are 13-13 on the season or Battle Lake, who are 2-23 on the season.

  The winner of Thursday’s game will take on either second seeded Park Christian, who are 22-4 on the season, or the winner of seventh seeded Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal who are 12-14 on the season or 10th seeded New York Mills who are 8-18 on the season on Saturday afternoon in Perham.

On the other side of the bracket, top seeded Ada-Borup West, who are 22-5 on the season and ranked sixth in the state, will take on the winner of eighth seeded Rothsay, who are 13-12 on the season, or ninth seeded Lake Park-Audubon, who are 7-19 on the season on Saturday in Perham. Fourth seeded Hillcrest, who are 20-6 overall, will take on fifth seeded Frazee who are 11-14 overall.

Last week the Hornets defeated Brandon-Evansville by a score of 74-51, before defeating Underwood by a score of 81-71 on Friday night.

Tuesday

Henning defeated Brandon-Evansville by a score of 74-51 on Tuesday night.

“Good road win tonight for the guys. Noah Umland got us off on the right foot by knocking down some shots early in the game,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets took an early 47-24 lead at halftime, before matching the Chargers 27-27 in the second half. As a team the Hornets shot 42 percent from the field and dominated on the glass as they pulled down 35 rebounds as a team. They also had 21 assists on 27 made shots from the field. 

Logan Kostelecky led the charge offensively with a double-double by scoring 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds. Kale Misegades scored 19 points to go along with seven assists, while Teigan Bjerke scored 12 points to go along with seven assists and eight rebounds. 

Umland knocked down five 3-pointers in the win to finish with 17 points, while Eli Reinbold scored four points and Beck Thorson scored three points in the win.

Friday

The Henning Hornets found themselves in unfamiliar territory as they trailed the Underwood Rockets by double digits at halftime on Friday night. The Rockets, behind a solid night from behind the 3-point line, led 47-36 at halftime. The Rockets finished 13-30 from behind the 3-point line, but turned the ball over 22 times behind a solid Henning defense. 

“Tonight was a playoff type atmosphere. Underwood is much better than their record indicates. They shot the ball very well in the first half. We definitely had to fight though some adversity and our guys responded in the second half and took care of business,” said head coach Randy Misegades. 

Henning shot 50 percent from the floor and knocked down 12-17 from the free throw line. 

Teigan Bjerke led the way offensively with 20 points, while Kale Misegades scored 17 points and Logan Kostelecky posted another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Noah Umland finished with 12 points, while Dawson Misegades scored six points and Ryan Despard and Eli Reinbold each finished with five points apiece.
