Henning junior Ellie Dague became Henning’s all-time leading scorer when she broke Dick Peterson’s school scoring record of 1,579 points against Wadena-Deer Creek on Thursday. Peterson’s record stood in Henning for nearly 55 years.
The City of Henning received some somber news about its utility funds and future projections. During its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night, the Henning City Council learned that the electric, water and sewer funds would lose money this year, unless the council raises its rates or changes its rate structure. During his address to the council, consultant Mike Bubany focused primarily on the water and sewer funds. He said the water fund lost approximately $40,000 from 2018-19, which isn’t necessarily bad, but with a number of projects coming up, the water fund would have a negative balance by 2024.

After being nominated by Henning Police Chief Jim Minion, Dean Nelson was recently honored for training law enforcement and civilians. He has received recognition for his many years of service to Otter Tail County’s many small communities. Henning Chief of Police Jim Minion nominated Deputy Nelson with good reason. Chief Minion knows that Nelson is a positive influence in many communities for education and training. Minion felt Nelson does an outstanding job training law enforcement, especially in the smaller communities.
After temperatures reached 40 degrees on Tuesday, many a snowman began to melt and slush filled the streets. Medallion hunters on the prowl morning, noon and night were thankful for the warmer temperatures. A set of snowmen built by the children of Scott and Deb Hart in Ottertail were not pleased, however, as they began to sink into a puddle.
In the late ‘80s, the Henning Fire Department took the first step in the creation of a community pool. That vision may have taken the next step through a generous donation to the pool’s fund this past week. The Henning Lions Club voted at their last meeting to donate $30,000 toward the construction of the community pool, a venture that is estimated at costing a few hundred thousand dollars. “We’re looking at a minimum of $350,000,” stated Bill Goepferd, one of the pool committee’s main spokespersons. “But that figure can be reduced through volunteer labor.”

The unwelcome “influ” is not as prompt in taking its leave as it was in coming here. It came like a scrooge and in spite of its “mild form” it made many of our citizens really sick. Some of the sick inmates now do not care to have it again in any “mild form.” There appeared to be so many cases last week that it seemed easier to name those who were well than the patients. On Monday the crest of the epidemic seemed to have been reached and passed. All the patients are doing nicely and will be well if no complications develop.

Tuesday was the birthday of Lincoln and was generally observed. Aside from his being the martyr president he was the greatest statesman that ever filled the presidential chair. He was of the people and for the people; the head of the army during the war yet he always refused to be accompanied by military army and display. That he recognized the power of the public sentiment and would hold back his own views and action until the time was ripe for action was shown in the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation; there is no doubt he was for the abolition of slavery, but the people did not favor it and would not have supported it at an earlier date. In time Lincoln will be honored as a statesman and emancipator.
