It’s a tradition spanning a generation, but for at least one year, ice fishermen across the region will not be flocking Middle Leaf Lake on Super Bowl Saturday.  Due to poor ice conditions, the annual Henning Rod and Gun Club ice fishing derby will be canceled this year. The event is held each year on Super Bowl Saturday and generally attracted several hundred people to the east end of Middle Leaf Lake. This year’s event was scheduled for Feb. 1.

The argument with probably still rage but Vern Smith went and did it. We are referring to the problem of whether or not the water is colder or warmer at the bottom of the lake. Still not satisfied he went to West Battle and the thermometer registered the same, 36 degrees at all depths, down to 40 feet.

Rortvedt, Johnson and Tschabold were the Henning scoring machine, and Juvrud and Dilly the bugbears of the opposing forwards. The subs, too had their share. Bonds proved scoring two points. The next game is January 16 at Perham.
