Four OTC wrestlers place at WDC tournament

The Otter Tail Central Bulldogs wasted little time getting into the thick of their schedule last week as the wrestlers participated in a pair of triangulars and a large 10-team tournament over the weekend at Wadena-Deer Creek. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs dropped each of their four team matches, but did have four wrestlers place at Saturday’s tournament.

Tuesday

The OTC wrestlers opened their season on Tuesday night in a tough triangular against both Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale/Parkers Prairie and state ranked United North Central. 

In their match against UNC, the Bulldogs came away with just one victory in the dual, that being a Charlie Bertrand major decision over Henry Mayer by a score of 14-5 at 114 lbs. At the time the win gave OTC a 4-3 lead in the dual. Unfortunately, the Warriors won the next 11 matches in a row to come away with a 63-4 win.

In their match against BHVPP, the Bulldogs fell by a score of 58-12.

Thursday

Things didn’t get any easier for OTC on Thursday night as the Bulldogs hosted West Central Area and Pelican Rapids in another triangular in Battle Lake. This time around the Bulldogs fell by scores of 60-15 to WCA and 51-22 to Pelican Rapids.

In their match against WCA, the Bulldogs secured three wins including a pin by Dylan Geihsler at the 2:04 mark of his 121 lbs. match, as well as a decision by Peter Newark by a score of 14-8 at 127 lbs. 

The Bulldogs also secured a pin from Mason Christianson at the 3:04 mark of his 145 lbs. match against Eli Domier. Unfortunately, WCA was able to win the final six matches of the night by pin in either the first or second period to come away with the win. The results from OTC’s match against Pelican Rapids were not available at the time of press.

Saturday

Four OTC wrestlers placed in the top six at the Dennis Kaatz Memorial Wrestling Invitational on Saturday at Wadena-Deer Creek. 

Mason Christianson had a busy day for the Bulldogs as he took fifth place at 145 lbs. and improved to 3-2 on the season. After falling to Mason Brauch of Wadena-Deer Creek in the opening round of the night by a 16-9 decision, Christianson worked his way through the consolation bracket by picking up a 9-3 decision over Tristan Hruby of Thief River Falls and securing a forfeit to advance to the consolation semi-finals. Unfortunately, he fell to Turner Beachy of Staples-Motley, before securing an 8-0 major decision over Donavan Zima of Detroit Lakes to secure fifth place. 

Other Bulldogs placing in the top six include: Dylan Geihsler who placed fourth at 121 lbs., William Schwartz who placed sixth at 189 lbs. and Charlie Bertrand who placed sixth at 114 lbs. 

As a team the Bulldogs took 10th place as a team with 31 points, while Staples-Motley placed first with 233 points.
