0Young Hornet squad to travel to Walker in non-conference action this week
The Henning girls basketball team had their first game of the season on Friday night as they traveled to Clarissa to take on the Browerville/Eagle Valley Tigers. The team this season is made up of many players who will be seeing their first significant varsity level minutes as the Hornets had 11 players play in the game with two seniors, two juniors, one sophomore, five freshmen and one eighth grader. Despite this youth and inexperience the girls gave themselves a chance in this game before ultimately losing by the final score of 48-46.
The first half was back and forth early and then a few too many mistakes led to Henning trailing 26-18 heading into the half. Freshman Addison Bode led the team with 5 points in the half.
The second half Henning got things going a little better on the defensive end and that led the team to make a comeback that allowed the Hornets to have a shot to tie up the game with just under 5 seconds left. Unfortunately, the shot didn’t fall and the Hornets lost by the final score of 48-46.
Head coach Mike Hepola said he was proud of the fight in this game, but there is plenty to work on. He said there were too many turnovers and the Hornets need to continue to work on our physicalness on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor.
Individually the Hornets were led offensively by senior Lila Thorson and freshman Addison Bode both in double figures with 16 and 10 points respectively. Callie Thompson added 5 points and Tiffany Weber 4 points. Rounding out the scoring were Alivia Emter, Abbigale Godding and Stella Iliff with 3 points each and Monica Hansen with 2 points. Thorson and Bode also led the team in rebounding with 6 rebounds each, Bode led the team with 3 assists and Emter led the team with 3 steals.
This week the Hornets will travel to Walker on Tuesday, before taking a break from game action over the Thanksgiving weekend.
