Henning School will be going back to the late 1800s this week as part of their annual fall musical. This year’s musical is entitled “Newsies” and is based on the real-life Newsboys strike of 1899.
This year’s musical takes place in New York City where a group of “newsies,” a group of people who sold newspapers back in the day, fight against unfair conditions set by newspaper publishers. The musical is an adaptation of the 1992 musical released by Disney by the same name.
The cast is mainly made up of male members this year, but all 52 students cast in the musical have a part, whether it is the leads, the chorus or backstage.
Among the main characters this year include: Jack, (Steven Mills), the leader of Newsies; Katherine (Breanna Bunkowski), the reporter who shares the Newsie’s story; Davey (Elliot Severson) and Les (Garrett Haglund), two brothers who join the Newsies and help lead the strike; and Mr. Pulitzer (Cade Strege), the owner of the newspaper.
There will be three performances of the musical this year, including a 7 p.m. performance on Friday and Saturday night, as well as a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m. The performances will be held at the Henning School gym.
Tickets for this year’s musical can be purchased at the door for $5. Concessions will be available at the beginning and intermission of the musical.
