With a sea of orange behind them, Autumn Grasswick, Megan Rinicker, Sydney Eckhoff, Ally Hart and Ellie Dague celebrate Henning’s 3-1 win over Wadena-Deer Creek on Saturday night. The Hornets, who are 24-7 on the season, defeated the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines in the Section 6A championship game after Dague and Rinicker blocked a shot for the 25th and final point in the fourth game. Shortly after the ball landed on the court the Henning School student section stormed the Perham High School court and mobbed the Henning volleyball players. The section championship is the first in school history for the volleyball team. The Hornets will take on second seeded Waterville-Elysian-Morristown in the opening round of the state volleyball tournament on Thursday at 3 p.m. at the Xcel Energy Center.
There may as well be a million miles separating the shores of Henning High School to the trenches of a rugby scrum. However, for three recent Henning High School graduates, the popular European sport has proved to be an easy transition to make. Nick Haugen, Caden Johnson and Thomas Ebeling joined the Minnesota State University-Moorhead rugby team this fall and have helped the team qualify for the national championship. Never mind the fact that none of them played rugby in high school and really didn’t know the ins and outs of the sport until showing up on the first day of practice.

Henning City Council joins protest against Otter Tail Power increases. The council went on the record Tuesday night opposing a recent announcement by the Otter Tail Power Co. that the company plans a substantial hike in rates for wheel age of electrical power. In protest, the council pledged $1,120 to a fund established by other communities, which also have as their source of power the Missouri Basin Municipal Power Agency, to fight the action in court if necessary. This would represent an increase of $13, 140 or a 214 percent jump for a year ending Dec. 1, 1975, when the city contract is up. The council adopted a resolution opposing any attempt to increase rates charged by the power company for transmission service, and joined other similarly situated municipalities in their opposition to the increase. Council member Frank Formanek was appointed as the city’s representative in handling this matter. Other agency members include Alexandria, Barnesville, Benson, Big Stone City, S.D.; Detroit Lakes, Elbow Lake, Lake Park, and Ortonville, who have also contributed funds to fight the proposed increases.
A total of 326 Henning voters turned out for general election on Tuesday to cast their ballots in the general election, which saw county incumbents returned to their offices and several upsets in state race.

Harlan Syverson has been named “Bean King” of the Henning High School by members of the Letterman’s Club. Seems that the members weighed in for their bean feed Friday night and Harlan weighed exactly seven pounds more after stowing away the beans. That, brother, is a lot of beans!
