Myiesha Antoni and Brynn Reinbold attempt to block a shot during last week’s game against New York Mills.

The Henning Hornets are off to a good start to their 2024 fall season. After four games the Hornets overall record is 2-2.

In their first game of the season the Hornets defeated Lake Park-Audubon 3-1. In their next game, the Hornets fell to a solid Barnesville team 1-3. The Hornets rebounded in their next game with a win over Brandon-Evansville 3-2. The fourth game of the season ended in a disappointing 1-3 loss to New York Mills.

In each game, the Hornets have played scrappy and fought hard.

Head coach Kristy Finck said she has seen a lot of improvement happening each night. If they can put everything together from serve receiving, setting and hitting the ball with more confidence and aggressiveness the Hornets are going to surprise a lot of teams this season.

Finck said the Hornets have to work on being more consistent and trusting our teammates. However, one area that she has seen improvement is in Henning’spassing.  If Henning’s passes are to target their setters can get the hitters better looks.

Playing varsity so far this season are senior: Kendra Juvurd,  juniors: Myiesha Antoni, Cambrie Johnson, Emmalyn Bergstrom, Lillian Moench, Jenna Domier, Breanna Bunkowski and freshmen: Alivia Emter, Adison Bode, Bella Olson and Brynn Reinbold.

As Adison Bode looks on, Bella Olson passes the ball to the front line during last week’s game between Henning and New York Mills. The Hornets are 2-2 on the season, but lost last week’s match in NY Mills 3-1.

Leading the team in kills after the first four games is Myiesha Antoni with 51, she is followed by Addison Bode with 25, Emmalyn Bergstrom and Bella Olson with 22, Alivia Emter with 21 and Brynn Reinbold with 10.

Antoni and Reinbold are leading the team in blocks with 9 and 8 apiece. Emter is leading in set assists with 90 and Cambrie Johnson has 49.  Defensively Lilian Moench has 85 digs and Addison Bode has 62. Cambrie Johnson leads the team with 12 ace serves.

As a whole team the Hornets are serve-receiving at a 2.0, which is about 73 percent to the target. Finck feels that if Henning can improve on this they will be much more successful as a team.

This week is an exciting week for the Lady Hornets, as they finally get to play in our own gym. For the first three weeks, Henning had to practice at different locations and their opening four games were played away. It’s going to be great to be back home again.

On Tuesday Henning host a very solid Breckenridge team and Thursday the Hornets host Park Region Conference opponent Verndale Pirates. On Saturday the Hornets travel to Long Prairie to compete in the Browerville Tournament.
