Much like the weather outdoors, the bidding and buying at the 28th Annual Lutheran Island Camp Quilt Auction was hot and on fire on Saturday. The quilt auction, which benefits Lutheran Island Camp, raised over $40,000. The day featured over 300 quilts that were auctioned off, as well as a silent auction, horse rides, inflatable rides, lunch and time to look around the East Battle Lake camp.
He may be gone, but the memory of the late Lester Kimber is living on through a cherry 1979 Chevy Monte Carlo. Lester raced the vehicle several years ago and it was recently given to his grandson Gunnar Kimber of rural Underwood. Lester passed away on Oct. 29, 2018 at Good Smaritan Society in Battle Lake after being a fixture in the Henning community at Kimber Auto on the corner of Henning’s Main Street. He later passed on the business to his son, Dondi, who contunies to operate the custom auto body shop today.
County board members, on July 30, approved the purchase of 71.8 acres of land just north of the current Phelps Mill Park. This will result in more than doubling the park from its current 51.2 acres. A master plan will be developed by a project steering committee to explore recreational options for the expansion area. The committee also will look at current park amenities in order to blend it all into one cohesive unit.

St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Ottertail is sporting a new look these days, as Laborers for Christ and other workers put together a 5,000-square-foot addition on the 1915 vintage building. The new addition will make the church handicap accessible and include a new fellowship hall, kitchen, meeting room, pastor’s study, office and restrooms. The addition replaces a much smaller narthex added in 1975 to accommodate coats and fellowship. Also part of the plan is a refurbishing of the main church building, to be done in phases, with a new roof, siding, carpet, sheetrock, and other improvements being considered. The church, located a mile east of Ottertail on Highway 108, has a membership of about 370.
On Saturday evening, July 31, the Minnesota State Patrol joined with Deputies from the Otter Tail County Sheriffs Department and officers from the Perham, Henning, New York Mills and Parkers Prairie Police Departments and Conservation officers from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources in a Night Cap Patrol Event in the Eastern portion of Otter Tail County. In spite of rather cool temperatures, these Troopers, Deputies and officers found traffic violations, and specifically alcohol related traffic violations, to be abundant. Over the course of the evening, a total of 154 motorists and boaters were contacted but an officer. These 154 contacts resulted 41 arrests, including eight Driving/Boating While Intoxicated violations, five open Container Violations, seven Minor Consumption/Not a Drop Violations and numerous other traffic related offenses.

Joseph Conrad, author, died at his home here. He was 67 years old. Conrad’s death was most sudden. He was apparently in normal health. Friends said that he complained of not sleeping well, but had a normal hearty breakfast and took a motor ride. On the ride he said he wasn’t feeling well and a doctor was summoned. The physician apparently felt the author was not in serious condition. Conrad died soon after. Conrad’s early life as a sailor and as a sea captain formed the background for his enthralling stories of the sea.
It costs from fifty to one hundred and fifty thousand dollars to drill and oil well, and by no means is every well and oil producer.

A number of New York capitalists have formed a company to build an airship bigger than any ocean liner afloat. The directors are men whose names will be recognized as shrewd, practical business men—men who have wealth, as well as sagacity. The plans for the airship and the principle upon which it will be built, have been approved by engineers of recognized standing, as well as by officers of the United States Navy.
Ringling’s Circus last Friday attracted probably the largest crowd ever assembled in Fergus Falls, about 8,000 people attending the afternoon performance. The parade was fine, many new features embodying it. A high wind came up about the time the afternoon performance was two-thirds over which nearly participated a panic among the vast audience. The circus people themselves were very nervous and got from under the main tent in a hurry when the tent poles began to bob up and down. In five minutes, the crowd was outside of the tent, without any person being hurt. As the weather was threatening the tents were pulled down the elephants taken to a hollow and the circus outfit loaded on to the cars.
