A resident who resides in southeastern Otter Tail County was the victim of a scam, reported to authorities on July 20, and lost close to $7,500. This was a Publisher’s Clearing House scam.

“The scam victim was instructed to purchase and send gift cards and trac phones to a location in Georgia,” said a county deputy. “Cash was also sent via Western Union.”

Here is an example of a scam attempt which county residents should avoid:

“Congratulations, you are the lucky winner of the $5 million Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes. All you need to do to claim your winnings is to wire us $2,500 to cover taxes and processing fees. Then we will send you a check for the full amount within five business days.”

Don’t fall victim to these types of scam attempts.

Three accidents, injuries reported

One person was injured when a ATV struck a deer on July 19 and another person was injured July 21 when a driver lost control of a pickup and entered the ditch. A third victim was the driver of a motorcycle on July 21.

The ATV-deer accident took place at 7:12 p.m. on 570th Avenue near New York Mills. A 15-year-old male sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victim was taken to an area hospital.
