With a severe thunderstorm rolling in, and the demo derby roaring in the background, the Deer Creek Shockers defeated the Henning North Stars by a score of 11-3 on Saturday night.
The two teams combined for 23 hits, but it was the Shockers who were able to string together enough hits in a row to score runs in five innings on Saturday night.
After Henning stranded the bases loaded without a run in the bottom of the first inning, the Shockers were able to plate a pair of runs in the second inning when Chase Nordlund hit an RBI single and scored later in the inning on a passed ball to make the score 2-0 in favor of Deer Creek.
The Shockers added two more runs in the third inning when Colby Shertler hit an RBI double and Travis George followed with an RBI single with two outs to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Shockers.
Nick Lindberg put the North Stars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when he hit a solo home run over the center field fence to make the score 4-1, before the Shockers added four more runs in the top of the fifth inning to pull away for good.
After picking up back-to-back walks to open the top of the fifth inning, Shertler hit a sacrifice fly to bring Tyson Misegades across the plate to make the score 5-1. Two more walks once again loaded up the bases with just one out, before Nolan Coyle hit a two-run single to right field and Matt Steege followed with a fielder’s choice that brought another run across the plate to make the score 8-1 in favor of Deer Creek.
Jonathan Goeden hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 9-1, before Blake Haverkamp hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to make the score 11-1 in favor of the Shockers.
Henning added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to an RBI single by Dan Marso and a fielder’s choice by Justin Love to end the scoring at 11-3.
Lane Dilly picked up the win for Deer Creek as he went seven innings and allowed just one run, while striking out five hitters.
Shertler, Travis George and Nolan Coyle led the way offensively for Deer Creek with two hits apiece.
Eric Fick took the loss on the mound for Henning as he went 4 1/3 innings and gave up five hits and seven earned runs. Stephen Lindberg came into the game in relief and gave up six hits and three earned runs in the loss.
