Vanessa Neels, Julie Johnson, Keith Fleischauer, and Stuart and Christie Fleischauer shared a few laughs over a cup of coffee in an otherwise quiet Betty’s Pantry on Wednesday, May 29. Twenty-five years ago in March, Betty’s Pantry, Ottertail Bakery and All Seasons Heating and Air Conditioning opened in Ottertail. There were a few other businesses that opened the same month in 1994, but they have since closed or moved out of the city limits.
When Jackson Nyhus tees off at the state golf tournament at Pebble Creek this week, the Henning High School junior will be doing something no other Henning athlete is thought to have done in the school’s history—compete in four straight state tournaments. After helping the Otter Tail Central golf team finish in fourth place as a team at state last year, Nyhus was a member of the state tournament OTC football team and the state champion Henning basketball team in March. He will be competing in his third straight state golf tournament this week.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) reports that construction is underway on Highway 78, for 11 miles along the east side of OtterTail Lake. This resurfacing project started June 1 and is expected to be completed in late June. Construction crews have trenched and widened shoulders and the overlay of the roadway and addition of two-foot shoulders is now underway. Central Specialities, Inc. is the prime contractor on this $642,000 project. During daylight hours, drivers should expect lane closures and short delays, and caution should be used as construction equipment, personnel and flag people will be located throughout this construction project. Mn/DOT encourages motorists to slow down and stay alert in and around any work zone.
Dr. Bruce Montplaisir, Henning Public School Superintendent, annouced recently that he will be resigning his post, effective June 30. The local boys’ baseball team, composed entirely of High School boys, went to Deer Creek Sunday and won a hard fought game from the city team there. The game went 11 innings and we feel proud of the boys that can win over a team composed of men, largely professional ball players. The final score was 13-10 in Henning’s favor. Dilly and Thompson pitched for the locals, while Warden was on the mound for Deer Creek.
Senator Robert LaFollette declared he will have nothing to do with the so-called third party convention at St. Paul, June 17. He asked his friends to stay away, giving his reason the participation in the St. Paul convention of communist organizations. At the same time LaFollette made clear that after the old parties’ conventions have been conducted unless one or both shall have purged themselves of “evil influences” and nominated progressive candidates, a progressive ticket and platform will be offered the voters.

About 9 p.m. the appearance of the clouds that arise in the southwest were threatening. The incessant lightning revealed the storm coming up rapidly and a few minutes later it struck Henning. Although the wind and rain was hard enough here it appears we only caught the edge of the storm. Reports come from the town of Elmo that quite a bit of damage was done. James Monroe who had the roof of his house entirely removed from his house was in town Monday to get material for a new roof. Al Stewart’s barn was blown down and his house partially unroofed. The old West house was leveled to the ground. Fortunately, no one lived in this building. John Chapman’s house was twisted four feet from its foundation. No persons were injured so far as known, but it gave people a good scare. Hail accompanied the storm.
