Quilting has a unique ability to provide warmth for the body, mind and soul. Not only do quilts provide heat on a cold winter’s night, but they provide an uplifting effect that few gifts can offer when facing a difficult situation or time.

Once a necessity and commonplace with people in the greater Minnesota area, quilting has become a bit of a dying art in recent years as less quilters are opting to create the difficult, yet-rewarding piece of art that can also double as a way to stay warm.

Jamie Wilson is hoping to reverse that trend as she prepares for her annual kids quilt camp at the Trinity Center in Henning. As part of the quilt camp, local youth will have the opportunity to learn how to quilt and create their own piece to bring home. A total of three camps will be held in June, July and August for four days each. The camps are free to attend and individuals can attend one camp or all three of them throughout the summer.

Wilson said all of the sewing machines, fabric, snacks and lunches will be provided to local youth free of charge. A large variety of fabric will be available to use for free and volunteers will help the youth make everything from a quilts to pillow cases to bring home.

“They are so creative, it is unbelievable how creative they are,” said Wilson.

Last year attendance varied from one class to the next, but Wilson said one of the camps had 22 people, including a large number of boys.

“At one of the sessions last year we had 22 people and out of the 22 kids there were nine boys,” she said.

Wilson said the camp is meant to be a fun way to learn the art of quilting and those who attend one of the camps can enter their pieces of work in the second annual kids quilt show that will be held in conjunction with National Night Out in August.
