Deer Creek’s general fund grew by just over $113,000 last year, which was a welcomed sight as the town prepares for a number of expansive projects in the near future.

During its regularly scheduled meeting last Monday night, the Deer Creek City Council heard its 2023 audit report from Dean Birkeland, of Carlson SV, who applauded the city’s general fund balance as it prepares for some upcoming projects.

The largest part of revenue in the city’s general fund comes from intergovernmental funds, which is funding that flows from the federal or state governments to the local governments at $96,432, as well as property taxes at $91,119.

While the general fund increased, the Deer Creek Fire Department showed a deficit last year after receiving $91,264 in receipts, but spending $124,776.

City clerk/treasurer Thomas Parish said the deficit was due to the way the fire department costs are shared between the city and the five townships the fire department serves.

In addition to the audit report, the city council heard that the water tower rehab preconstruction meeting will be held on June 5 at 10 a.m. The city council also approved the hiring of Bill Connolly as the new city clerk/treasurer when Parish retires later this summer.
