0Join the Otter Tail County Historical Society for a tour of Mt. Pleasant Cemetery on Friday, May 31 at 7 p.m.
High on a hill overlooking Clitherall Lake is the resting place of many Cutlerites, the Mormon splinter group that founded Otter Tail County’s first permanent settlement. Led by Alpheus Cutler, the group was living in southwestern Iowa until a vision by Cutler directed them to Minnesota to seek a section of land between two lakes.
A scouting party left Iowa in September 1864 and, after wintering in Red Wing, resumed their journey in April 1865. When they came upon an area between Clitherall and West Battle Lakes, they knew this was the place Cutler had envisioned.
Mt. Pleasant Cemetery was part of Hiram and Rachel Murdock’s homestead that he offered as a public cemetery. According to the Old Clitherall Storybook, “when many of the first graves were made, care was not taken to arrange them in perfect rows, the trees growing naturally among the graves often prevented their being placed more orderly.”
Join this serene setting we tell the fascinating life stories of those who formed Clitherall.
Cost for the tour is $10.
Mt. Pleasant is located two miles east of Battle Lake on State Hwy. 210.
