Forty-one years after Steve Ellenson joined the Henning Fire Department, Henning’s longest tenured volunteer firefighter has fought his last blaze. Ellenson, who joined the Henning Fire Department as just a 19-year-old kid, officially retired as a member of the fire department on April 1. He was the longest tenured member of the current fire department, and has been serving the City of Henning longer than many of the firefighters have been alive.
Spring is one of the busiest times of the year for local fire departments, and that was the case last week for the Henning Fire Department. Last week the Henning Fire Department responded to three fires in just a matter of days. With strong winds, no significant rain recently, and lots of dead grass/branches on the ground, conditions were ripe for large grass fires across the Otter Tail County region.

Area farmers are in the fields these days, planting what everyone of course hopes will be treated to just the right weather conditions in order to produce number crops. A crowd of 60-70 people came to Henning City Hall Tuesday, April 27, for a special meeting called to once again discuss the proposed municipal natural gas project. By the end of the sometimes contentious session, it was agreed almost all present that the Henning City Council should go forward as a united group. A meeting with the Perham council has been tentatively scheduled for May 11 to discuss the project further.

The Rome correspondent of the Daily Telegraph sends the substance of an interview he had with a prelate who assisted Sunday in the celebration of the 21st anniversary of the coronation of the pope at St. Peter’s cathedral. The prelate in question said that Cardinal Rampolla, the papal secretary of state is the real pope, and his object is to elect himself or one of his nominees to succeed Leo. “To attain this,” declared the ecclesiastic, “it is necessary that the pope should create new cardinals as the sacred college is now grouped as to leave Rampolla no chance.”
