A joke between longtime friends Brandy Hanson and Aaron Garland came to fruition on March 1 as Hanson completed the purchase of Gateway Pub in downtown Henning.

“Me and Aaron have been friends for a long time. We always joked about (Hanson purchasing the pub from Garland) and one day we joked about it and he said I actually just met with the realtor,” said Hanson.

Drawn to Gateway Pub by its pizza selection, fun atmosphere and community support, Hanson and her mother Roxann Skerik officially purchased the Gateway Pub on March 1. Prior to coming to the Gateway Pub, Hanson had worked nine years at the UpTown in downtown Wadena, but the mother-daughter duo have spent their entire lives in the restaurant industry.

“We have been in the restaurant industry our entire lives and we wanted to do something on our own,” said Hanson.

Originally from the Bemidji area, Hanson said she has always enjoyed the pizza at Gateway Pub and is planning to add several selections to the menu moving forward. She has also began opening the local establishment on Mondays and if enough staff can be found to cover Sundays, she is looking into opening up on Sundays as well. Recently, the Gateway Pub was closed on both Sundays and Mondays.

Gateway Pub is located at 516 Douglas Ave. in Henning. To call for take out, or for more information, contact 583-2157.
