Small town businesses have long been known to go the extra mile for customers and the community they serve. That is the case for Doug and Mary Trana and the staff at B&D Foods located in the heart of downtown Henning.

Grocery carts are lined up with items for local residents near the entrance of B&D Foods in Henning every Wednesday. B&D Foods has been offering free delivery of groceries to customers every week for several decades.

¶  Long before curbside pickup and grocery deliveries became a popular lexicon for customers during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, staff members were busy spending each Wednesday afternoon delivering groceries to customers and friends in the greater Henning area. In fact, Doug said grocery delivery has been done at the store at least one day a week since the early days of B&D Foods over 40 years ago.  ¶  “We have been doing it since the beginning of the B&D’s store,” said Doug. “It’s helping out the older people in town.”

Every Wednesday employees at B&D Foods are busy filling shopping carts for customers who then spend the better-part of their afternoon delivering groceries throughout the community. After spending the a good portion of the morning shopping for groceries, employees spend their afternoon delivering food and goodies across the area. While deliveries are free of charge within a short distance of Henning, employees will deliver groceries other days of the week as well for a $5 charge.

“It’s just a bonus we do (for our customers),” said Mary. “Winter time it is busier because people don’t want to go out.”

During the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic just four years ago, employees were kept busy throughout the day shopping for customers and meeting them at their vehicles or delivering it to their doorstep.

“It did really pick up during COVID,” said Doug.

Deliveries and curbside pickup are still a popular choice for patrons of B&D Foods as ice, rain and illness makes going outside to get necessities less-than ideal.

“The other day a mom called and said she had five sick kids and didn’t want to get out of her car to get groceries with her kids,” said Doug. “She called in and we brought her groceries out to them.”

Free grocery delivery for residents who live in the city limits and a short drive from Henning takes place every Wednesday. Customers are asked to call B&D Foods with their order as soon as they are able so employees can shop for the items and make sure everything can be delivered in a timely manner.
