Lyvia Misegades goes up for a shot during a recently basketball game in Henning against New York Mills. Last week she scored 10 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

The Henning girls basketball team only had one game this past week.

On Tuesday night the Hornets hosted the Verndale Pirates in a Park Region Conference battle.  Verndale came in with a 9-2 record and playing well so the Hornets had to play well, but certainly also knew they had a chance to win the game.

In the first half the Hornets struggled both offensively and defensively early on. Henning got things going better defensively, but were still struggling to score and went into halftime trailing 25-16.

In the second half the Hornets played OK defensively early on and got the game within 4 points a couple of times, but each time Verndale would run off a few buckets often due to some costly turnovers on Henning’s part. The Hornets ended up losing by the final score of 54-39.

Individually the Hornets were led by Lila Thorson with 11 points. Lyvia Misegades joined her in double figures with 10 points.  Ella Missling had 7 points, Tiffany Weber had a nice game with 6 points and Alivia Gunderson scored 5 points to round out the scoring.

Alivia Gunderson led the team with an impressive 11 rebounds from her guard position. Thorson and Misegades led the team with 3 assists each and Misegades and Callie Thompson led the team with 2 steals each.

The loss drops Henning’s record to 5-7 overall and 2-4 in the conference.  The Hornets have two conference games as they travel to Bertha-Hewitt on Tuesday and host Menahga on Friday.
