A county resident who lives near Highway 24 in western Otter Tail County learned the hard way never to leave a wallet inside a vehicle.

Sheriff deputies, on Dec. 20, reported that a missing wallet was found near the highway but missing was $120 in cash. The vehicle had been left unlocked with the wallet inside.

The owner was able to lock credit cards and no unauthorized charges took place.

Authorities warn county residents that even when a car is locked, a determined criminal can easily gain access to a vehicle. Having your wallet or purse in plain sight gives them more reason to break in.

Once a thief gets his or her hands on personal items, this can easily lead to identity theft, financial fraud or other serious consequences.
