Henning to host Chargers Tuesday night as part of boys-girls doubleheader

The Henning girls basketball team has had a couple busy weeks and have come away with several nice wins to get their overall record to 4-3 on the season.

Tuesday, Dec. 5 at Menahga 74-27 loss

On Tuesday, Dec. 5 the Hornets traveled to Menahga for their first conference game of the season. Henning knew the Braves would be one of the favorites in the conference and the combination of them playing well, and Henning not playing well, led to a real one-sided game as the Hornets lost 74-27.

Henning didn’t shoot well and couldn’t stop them and fell behind by a bunch early on. That early deficit resulted in the Hornets never really having a chance to come back, and as a result, several of the Henning reserves received some additional playing time down the stretch of the game.

Offensively the Hornets were led by Lyvia Misegades with 8 points, Lila Thorson with 7 points and Alivia Gunderson with 6 points. Misegades led the team with 11 rebounds and 4 assists.  Callie Thompson led the team with 2 steals.

The loss dropped Henning to 0-1 in the conference and 1-3 overall on the season.

Friday, Dec. 8 vs. Pillager 45-39 win

Henning hosted Pillager in their second conference game of the week and again the Hornets knew they would have their hands full. The girls really have realized that defense has to be the top priority as the offense can come and go, but they need to be a solid team defensively every game and that certainly helped lead them to this nice home win 45-39.

Offensively the Hornets once again had way too many turnovers, but were able to score enough points to get the win.

Henning’s two healthy seniors once again led the way with Lyvia Misegades scoring 27 points, while Alivia Gunderson had a solid 15 points. Misegades had a double-double as she had a game-high 15 rebounds.

Friday, Dec. 15 at Staples-Motley 59-48 win

On Friday night the Hornets traveled to Staples to take on the Cardinals who are returning a couple really good players from last year’s squad. The team knew that defense would once again be a key as the Hornets got off to a good start, but then got into a little foul trouble, which forced the team to go a little deeper to the bench. Fortunately Henning got senior Ella Missling back for a few minutes in this game for the first time this season as she is returning from an injury. Those minutes, along with some solid minutes from Henning’s other reserves, helped the Hornets escape with an 11-point win.

Lyvia Misegades had another huge performance individually as she led Henning in scoring with 35 points including 11-11 from the free thow line. She also finished with 19 rebounds and 8 steals for another double-double, just missing out on a triple-double.

Alivia Gunderson, despite missing several minutes while in foul trouble, joined Misegades in double figure scoring with 13 points. Lila Thorson had a very solid game leading us with 7 assists and also chipped in with 8 rebounds.

The win brings Henning’s overall record to 4-3 on the season.

This week the Hornets have two more games, both against section opponents before the Christmas break as they host Brandon-Evansville on Tuesday night and then travel to Lake Park-Audubon on Thursday.
