New oncologist, surgeon, family medicine provider at LRH

Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) has announced three recent additions to the provider team, including a new Oncologist at the Cancer Center, a General Surgeon who will serve in both Fergus Falls and Elbow Lake, and a new family medicine primary care provider in the Fergus Falls Clinic.

Dr. Anthony Rooney, Hematologist/Oncologist is a Belgrade, Minn., native who received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry at the University of Minnesota Morris. He went on to obtain his medical degree at the University of Arkansas College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Virginia Health System and his fellowship in Hematology/Oncology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology. 

Dr. Rooney is very passionate about providing access to high-quality cancer and hematology care in rural communities and is excited about the opportunity to serve the Fergus Falls area in this capacity. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three young daughters. They enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, and frequenting local parks.

Dr. Marisa Christinia, General Surgeon, will be serving in the Fergus Falls and Elbow Lake with clinic appointments and surgery schedules at both locations. She left a career with the Air Force Center for Engineering & Environment to study medicine at the University of North Texas in Fort Worth HSC – College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and Duluth in the rural categorical track. She has contributed to research on traumatic brain injury outcomes in rural trauma centers and she served on the Lake Superior College’s surgical technology Program Advisory Committee. 

She is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Northern Plains Rural Surgical Society and the Associate of Women Surgeons. She is also a past member of the University of Minnesota Department of Surgery’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Council.  She continues to seek opportunities to work on DEI and to support underrepresented minorities in medicine by serving as a mentor to traditionally underrepresented students studying medicine. Dr. Christinia is passionate about rural healthcare and is especially excited to bring some new procedures to the community including varicose vein treatments and minimally invasive procedures for acid reflux and hiatal hernias. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband and their son, cooking and trying new cuisines, juicing, and traveling.

Dr. Ibrahim Khan joins the primary care team, providing family medicine appointments at the Fergus Falls Main Clinic. 

Dr. Khan received his Doctor of Medicine from the American University of the Caribbean and completed his residency at the Reid Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Richmond, IN. Dr. Khan joins the the primary care team at LRH to offer a wide range of medical care to all ages infant to aged. He is skilled in minor procedures and lesion removal, women’s health, sports medicine, joint injections and thrives on providing a wide range of care to patients. When asked about his decision to join Lake Region Healthcare he expressed how impressed he and his wife were with the community of Fergus Falls and that he wants to be part of this growing community and an organization that is big enough to offer specialty care while also small enough to be very personal and individualized in care delivery. 

In his spare time, he enjoys camping and outdoor activities with his wife and four children. He also likes playing guitar, making unique tea varieties, and playing chess.
