Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) is pleased to announce two more additions to the provider team offering care at the Fergus Falls clinic this month, introducing midwife services and expanding access to pediatric care.

Alica Trakas, Certified Nurse Midwife is excited to be one of two providers joining in 2023 to add midwifery services complement LRH’s women’s health services. She will provide well woman care from puberty through menopause along with antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum services in our OB/GYN women’s health department in Fergus Falls.

Trakas received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, MI and worked in La Crosse, Wis., at Gundersen Health System and Logistic Health INC. After working as a Registered Nurse on an obstetrics unit in Eau Claire, Wis., at Marshfield Medical Center-Eau Claire she knew she wanted to continue her education to become a Certified Nurse Midwife. Her Master of Science in Nursing is from Frontier Nursing University in Versailles, Ken. Her most recent clinical experiences have been at Bellin Health in Green Bay, Wis. and at Marshfield Clinic in Eau Claire, Wis. She is a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives. 

She grew up in the Upper peninsula of Michigan and loves small town living. She married her husband Mark in October of 2022 and they are excited to start their family here in Fergus Falls. 

She is excited to be in Fergus Falls and to help start offering Midwifery to the Fergus Falls area. “Midwives can do a lot more than what is commonly thought and I look forward to working with patients and helping them reach their health goals through their lifespan,” Trakas said. 

Molly Malmstrom, Pediatric NP, a Battle Lake, native is joining the LRH Pediatrics Department in the Fergus Falls clinic. Malmstrom received her Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Degree from Maryville University and holds her BA in nursing from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. She has served as a Registered Nurse at Lake Region Healthcare’s Cancer Center since 2021 and previously worked at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Pediatric inpatient nursing and Pediatric Hematology & Oncology. She is a member of the Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurses. 

“I always knew I wanted to work with kids. I come from a large family and kids have always had a special place in my heart. I’m excited to continue working with children, making a difference back home in my rural community,” Malmstrom said. 

Malmstrom has volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and youth group leader, but these days her time is focused on taking care of her twins and coaching elementary sports. She also enjoys camping, running, and spending time with family. She will see children of all ages, newborn to age 21, for acute, chronic and well checks at the Fergus Falls clinic.
