There has been a certain aroma of wood fire that has been missing from Highway 78 just outside of Ottertail and Battle Lake for the past six years. Ever since Elmer’s Texas BBQ was destroyed in a fire in 2017 the smell of a wood fire smoker preparing food for that night’s meal has been absent from motorists and pedestrians near Otter Tail Lake.

That changed this spring when two of Elmer’s Texas BBQ previous owners, who both owned the restaurant at different times through the years, opened a BBQ-inspired food truck that has been largely stationed at Balmoral Golf Course.

While Elmer’s Texas BBQ has not been open since 2017, Mary Becher and Ursula Nanson still felt a passion for smoked meats and hearty meals. Both Becher and Nanson were staples at the restaurant through the years as they molded their craft to perfect smoking meats for the masses.

That passion for smoked meats continued to evolve as the pair began discussing opening a new brick and mortar restaurant in the region. Their plans changed when one of their friends purchased Balmoral Golf Course just outside of Battle Lake as the pair felt a tug to take their passion for BBQ on the road.

“We knew we wanted to do something with a restaurant, but we didn’t want to do a brick and mortar,” said Becher.

Bossy Babes BBQ features a mixture of beef brisket, pulled pork and baby back ribs that is cooked fresh each day.

The food truck will be on the road at places like graduation parties, open houses, lake day picnics and a number of locations throughout the summer. While the food truck will be stationed at Balmoral Golf Course for much of the summer, Becher and Nanson are also planning to go to a number of community events like Outstate Brewing, Fergus Brewing, Kirkbride Concert Series, Elbow Lake Golf Course and more.

For more information about Bossy Babes BBQ, or for their schedule, visit them online at www.bossybabesbbq.com. The food truck will be open most Tuesdays through Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. and Fridays through Sundays from 12-8 p.m. at Balmoral Golf Course.
