TJ Rinicker and Hope Grasswick were all smiles as they walked through grand march at Thumper Pond on Saturday. Under the theme of “Rustic Romance” Henning School hosted its annual grand march and prom in Ottertail.

The Henning School Board has narrowed the list of candidates to fill the soon-to-be open position of school superintendent to three. During its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday night, the school board went through a list of 20 candidates and selected nine candidates that were interviewed on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 at the school.

There were some smiles, hugs and even a few tears after Samantha Witt and Grace Weller found out they qualified for the state speech meet on April 14. “We both cried,” said Weller who is in her fourth year of speech at Henning School. Witt said she was surprised at the news she qualified for state speech this year. “I can’t remember what we did but we cried,” said Witt.

Henning students displayed some of the map panels they completed last week for “Build a New World,” a project of the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology. The project will culminate in the construction of a scale model of the earth using 1,600 panels prepared by students throughout the state.

The Rev. James Thoennes, who has been serving as priest of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Henning and of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bertha for several years, has resigned from his duties in the two parishes. Members of his parishes were informed in mid-March of a sexual allegation lawsuit that had been field against the St. Cloud Diocese and St. Anthony Catholic Church of St. Cloud, which Thoennes served in the 1960s.

Members of the Henning Board of Education and their facilities task force received advice from two outside sources that now is the time to get to work on school building plans. The hope is to get the plans ready for a bond issue election in the fall.

In a business transaction this weekend, Len Dreyer purchased the building, fixtures and business of Veril and Gloria Hagen. He plans to move the Henning Surge Service to the new location across from the post office as soon as some remodeling is done.

Ed Christopherson, a Vining native and Henning High School graduate, has been hired as head football coach at the Alexandria High School.

Howard Trana attended the dedication of the new post office at Deer Creek Saturday.

Hans O. Moe of Minneapolis has sold his Woodland Park on East Battle Lake to a gentleman from St. Paul… The new owner will take possession at once.

The basket social held at the Leaf Lake Pavilion las Friday was a grand success in every respect. The baskets alone brought $80.

The unusually cold weather of the past week has resulted in some heavy snowfall in the west. This is especially true in the Black Hills country, where snow is reported at 22 inches on the level and railroad traffic is impeded.

Meatless days are no longer required, for a time at least, according to the latest decree by the food administrator.

Father Time is evidently turning his clock backward, judging from the amount of snow that has fallen the past 10 days. The fall will exceed four feet.

The snowplow will open the roads tomorrow so mail can go as usual on Saturday.

The old maps of this county show a projected railroad line running through the country from the southeast to the northwest, crossing the Northern Pacific near here, and running by East Battle Lake, Otter Tail and Lida lakes to Pelican Rapids. There is no reason why this line should not become a reality.

Vining proposed to have a cheese factory.

The storm of the past week has made the attendance at the village schools very light.

Seeding has begun—by those who dug dirt out from under the snow to put in boxes in which to sow cabbage seeds.
