There are three things you can do to be a better reader: #1 Read, #2 Read and #3 Read.
This was a reading challenge month in the library. Mrs. Quammen and Mrs. Wiese started a reading challenge with kindergarten through fifth grade students three years ago. They challenged the students to read an extra 20 minutes a night for a month. After they read for 20 minutes, they then marked off a spot on their reading challenge bookmark. Once the bookmark spots were all marked off, a parent signature was required and then they could turn their bookmark in.
At the end of the month students who completed their bookmarks could choose a special mug. The mug then would be filled with hot chocolate/marshmallows and the students enjoyed the treat while also having a special guest read to them.
With all the snow days, late starts, and early outs, the hot chocolate in a mug celebration had to be moved back a week. So while it may be in the 60’s outside, the students were still able to enjoy their hot chocolate and their own special mug while listening to a special guest reader.
For the fifth grade students, Henning Police Chief Mike Helle came in and instead of reading, the students were able to talk openly with Helle about things that interested them and what his job entails. These students will have the Henning police chief next year for the DARE program so it was good for them to get to know him.
Mrs. Emter’s kindergarten students listened to Mrs. Cichy read them “A Case of the Stripes.” Since Tammy Cichy normally sees these students as the school nurse and secretary, this was a great chance for them to get some giggles while listening to the story.
Mrs. Amundson’s kindergarten students were entertained by Andrea Honebrink. She brought with her the book “The Wonky Donkey.” This story always gets the kids laughing, especially when they view the illustrations.
All the third graders enjoyed Dani Koenen reading two of the brand new books donated to us from Lisa Libraries, the books were about being lost and then found and about having kindness. There were 24 third graders enjoying the special day, they were also able to sing happy birthday to Korie Koenen who has been lucky enough to have hot chocolate and a mug celebrated on her birthday two years in a row.
The second graders in Mrs. Finck’s class were read to by Kayla Hoelscher Mrs. Hoelscher read several of the new books that the library has recently purchased with grant money.
Mrs. Jorgenson’s second graders listened to John Saari read the book “The Giving Tree.” This is a favorite story of many students.
Principal Thomas Williams came in during the afternoon and read to the first graders one of the first Berenstain Bear stories. Mr. Williams used to read these stories to his own children and has loved them ever since.
Melissa Sparks was the guest reader to the fourth graders. She continued a story that they are in the middle of reading with Mrs. Wiese called “Wild Life.” It takes place near where Mrs. Sparks grew up in North Dakota and has to do with a hunting dog, a young boy whose parents are serving in the military and grandparents.
Please stop by the Henning Public School library and let them help you locate a book that is just right for you. They are open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:30 p.m. following the school calendar.
