Henning finishes season with a record of 26-3

Faith Fisher takes a contested lay up during the second half of Tuesday’s sub section championship game against Underwood. Fisher finished with 11 points in Henning’s 57-47 loss.

The varsity girls basketball season unfortunately came to an end last Tuesday evening with a 57-47 loss to Underwood in the Section 6A North Subsection Championship.

Head coach Mike Hepola said as hurtful as this loss was and continues to be, at the end of the day the girls need to be proud of their season and great accomplishments. The Hornets had a great season overall finishing with a 26-3 overall record with all three losses being competitive games and coming to teams that have qualified for the state tournament, Perham and Underwood two times. They were undefeated in the Park Region Conference winning the conference championship and were ranked in the state’s top 10 rankings for the majority of the season.

Ally Hart drives to the basket during the second half of Tuesday’s game against Underwood. She finished the game with 12 points.

“I want to thank the entire team for representing our school and community well and a special thank you goes out to our eight seniors who I’ve enjoyed getting the chance to coach over the years and watch them turn into tremendous young ladies that I truly wish nothing but the very best to in their future endeavors of which I know they will be very successful,” said Hepola. “It hasn’t always been easy for you all, but I truly hope you all know how much I care about you and look forward to you coming back and supporting the program.  Thank you also to all the parents for supporting your daughters and the program.”

Tuesday vs. Underwood at Perham, 57-47 loss

The first time Henning played Underwood it was a defensive battle as both teams held the other way below their offensive average and this one got off to that same kind of start.

Underwood really packed their defense in the paint and made it tough on Henning, so the Hornets knew they would need a mixture of inside and outside scoring. The Hornets girls did a great job of sticking together and were able to build a 9-point lead at one point and went into halftime with a 25-19 lead. All five starters scored and when Henning needed a couple shots from the outside Natalie Eckhoff hit a couple big 1st half 3-pointers.

In the second half Henning went cold for a stretch and Underwood got going on their offensive end. The Hornets tried to switch up some defense, but the Rockets continued to hit shots and built up a 14-point lead at one point. Henning continued to battle but unfortunately we couldn’t catch them and lost by a final score of 57-47.

Individually the Hornets were led offensively by Ally Hart and Faith Fisher both in double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.  Becca Frederick finished with 9 points, Natalie Eckhoff 8 points and Lyvia Misegades 7 points.

Misegades led the team with a game-high 13 rebounds. Frederick, Hart and Misegades all had a team-high 2 assists and Faith led the team with 2 steals.
