Henning improves to 19-1 overall, 12-0 in PRC

The Henning Hornets clinched at least a share of the Park Region Conference championship with a pair of wins last week.

After handing Wadena-Deer Creek just their second loss in the conference this season on Tuesday night by a score of 75-67, the Hornets defeated New York Mills by a score of 77-34 on Friday night.

The two wins improve the Hornets to 12-0 in the conference with just two games remaining on their schedule. WDC is in second place with a record of 9-2 in the conference.

The Hornets are currently ranked fourth in the state with a record of 19-1 and will host Verndale on Tuesday and Parkers Prairie on Thursday night. 

Tuesday

Henning found itself in a rare hole on Tuesday night as the Hornets trailed Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 37-33 at halftime. 

The Hornets bounced back in a big way early in the second half to defeat the Wolverines by a score of 75-67 on Tuesday. The game was between the top two teams in the conference as Henning came into the game with a perfect conference record and Wadena-Deer Creek coming into the game with just one loss in conference action. That loss came at the hands of Henning when the Hornets defeated the Wolverines by a score of 55-44 on Jan. 5.

The game was just as close this time around as the Hornets were able to overcome a tough Wadena-Deer Creek team for the second time this season.

“Our guys battled through some adversity tonight and still took care of business,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “Give WDC credit. They played hard, physical, and took some things away from us offensively.”

The Hornets were led by Mason Hammer who scored 31 points on just 13-20 shooting from the field. He also pulled down 8 rebounds, while Lane Dilly had a monster night on the boards as the junior scored 17 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Dilly went 6-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to keep the Hornets in front near the end of the game. 

Carter Dilly hit three 3-pointers to finish with 15 points as he played through an injury to drill a number of big buckets to keep the Wolverines at bay.

Misegades said the play of Lane and Carter Dilly were a big factor in helping to keep Henning in front of Wadena-Deer Creek  down the stretch. 

“We certainly didn’t play a great game, but good teams find a way to win when they don’t play their best,” said Misegades. “But, we are proud of our overall team effort. It takes the entire group to be successful, including guys doing a lot of things don’t show up in a box score.”

Friday

It looked like a tornado came out of the locker room on Friday night as the Henning Hornets jumped all over the New York Mills Eagles. The Hornets speed on both the offensive and defensive end of the court was too much for NY Mills to handle as the Hornets defeated the Eagles by a score of 77-34. The score was 41-14 at halftime as Henning held the Eagles to just single digits scoring for most of the first half.

“We were able to jump out to a big margin early and slowly extended the lead. Eli Reinbold did some nice things for us in the second half off the bench tonight,” said head coach Randy Misegades. 

Mason Hammer once again dominated the game offensively as he hit five 3-pointers on his way to a 30 point night. He also pulled down 6 rebounds and went 12-19 from the floor. 

Kale Misegades finished with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while his older brother Tyson Misegades scored 15 points in the win. 

Lane Dilly finished with 8 points and 8 rebounds, while Eli Reinbold finished with a solid 7 points off the bench for the Hornets.
