Fifth ranked Hornets fall to second ranked Panthers

Mason Hammer wasted little time on Friday to score his sixth point of the night. The Henning senior made a shot from the perimeter just minutes into Friday’s game in New York Mills to join the Henning history books with his 1,000th career point. He was the second Henning basketball player of the week to hit the milestone as fellow senior Faith Fisher scored her 1,000th point on Thursday night in a girls basketball game.

He is the first boys basketball player to reach the historic 1,000 point mark since Isaac Fisher two years ago.

In addition to Friday’s game, the Hornets picked up another conference win against Verndale as Henning defeated the Pirates by a score of 76-34.

On Saturday, the fifth ranked Hornets fell to second ranked Cass Lake-Bena 71-70 in a thrilling game at the Crossover Classic in Perham. The loss drops the Hornets to 11-1 on the season.

Henning will look to rebound this week as they travel to Pillager on Tuesday and host Bertha-Hewitt on Thursday in a pair of Park Region Conference games.  

Tuesday

Henning shot 56 percent from the field and hit 11 3-pointers as they defeated Verndale by a score of 76-34 on Tuesday night. The Hornets were comfortable from the field throughout the night and no player who scored a point shot below 50 percent from the field.

“We played a more complete game tonight and finished what we started without having as many lapses throughout the game,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets led by a score of 48-20 at halftime and outscored the Pirates by a 28-14 margin in the second half. The team spread the ball around throughout the night as they had 27 assists on 31 made shots from the field. 

“We created some turnovers early which led directly to points. Our guys did a very nice job sharing the basketball. It also helps when we make shots, which we did tonight,” said Misegades.

Tyson Misegades led the way offensively with 24 points, while Kale Misegades registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 assists. Tyson Misegades just missed out in registering a double-double of his own as he had 9 assists and 4 steals. 

Mason Hammer also reached double figures with 15 points off of just 6-9 shooting, while Lane Dilly scored 7 points and had a team high 9 rebounds. Carter Dilly also had a solid game from the field with 9 points.

Friday

Henning took on the defending sub section and conference champions New York Mills on Friday night for the first time since the Eagles ended the Hornets season in the sub section championship game last year. This time around it was all Hornets as they jumped out to as much as a 60-16 lead in the second half and came away with a commanding 68-33 win. The Hornets led by a score of 49-14 at halftime.

“Another good PRC road win tonight. We jumped out to a big lead early and then extended the margin, leading 60-16 just a few minutes into the second half,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “A lot of guys were able to get substantial varsity minutes, which was great for our team.”

Eight Hornets reached the scoring column on Friday night, but perhaps none were more memorable than the 10 points scored by Mason Hammer, who joined the 1,000 career point club just minutes into the game.

“Congratulations to Mason Hammer on reaching the 1,000 point milestone tonight early in the first half,” said Misegades.

Tyson Misegades led the way offensively with 15 points, while Carter Dilly scored 11 points, Lane Dilly scored 11 points and Hammer finished with 10 points. 

Kale Misegades went 4-5 for 8 points, while Riley Bode went 2-4 for 6 points, Carter Kenyon scored 4 points and Eli Reinbold finished with 3 points. As a whole, 12 players received extended action in the game after Henning opened that early lead in the first half.

Saturday

All eyes were on Perham on Saturday afternoon as a pair of top 5 ranked teams squared off in the annual Breakdown Crossover Classic. Second ranked Cass Lake-Bena took on fifth ranked Henning in a game between two unbeaten teams. 

After leading for much of the game, Henning came up just short as Cass Lake-Bena did just enough down the stretch to come away with a 71-70 win. 

“Great atmosphere and venue at the Breakdown Crossover Classic in Perham today against one of the best teams in Class A basketball,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets led 38-37 at halftime thanks to a solid night shooting from the field. Henning shot 44 percent from the field and went 8-20 from behind the 3-point line. 

Four Hornets reached double figures with Mason Hammer leading the way with 24 points, while freshman Kale Misegades scored 19 points, Tyson Misegades scored 13 points and Lane Dilly scored 10 points. Carter Dilly added to the offensive output with 4 points. 

Kale Misegades led the way with 7 assists and 9 rebounds, while Lane Dilly pulled down 8 rebounds in the loss.

Despite suffering their first loss of the season, Randy Misegades said playing games like the one on Saturday against the second ranked team in the state will benefit the Hornets in the long run.

“Our guys showed a ton of fight, played extremely  hard, and battled to the wire. Cass Lake made one more play than we did. I am proud of our effort. Playing in a game like this helps us in the long run,” said Misegades.
