Programs assists classrooms to buy items, supplies

For as little as 22 cents a day, you could make a difference in the lives of students at Henning Public School. And do you want to know the best part—you can help the students without even leaving the comfort of your couch or living room.

The 21st annual Adopt-A-Classroom program is underway at Henning School this fall. The program seeks a donation from area residents, businesses and organizations to “adopt” a classroom for a small donation. Organizers suggest a donation of $80 per classroom, but any amount of money will be accepted for the betterment of each classroom in the school. Donors can earmark their money to go to a specific classroom or grade, as well as places like the library.

The program is being coordinated this year by school librarian Pam Wiese and retired English teacher and current volunteer at the school Marjorie Quammen. 

The funds go directly to the classroom teacher so they can purchase the items they need. The goal is to give teachers additional money to purchase things like educational games, flash cards, class trips, story books, bean bags, unique chairs and costumes for plays that may not otherwise be covered in their classroom budget. 

Those who adopt-a-classroom will have their name posted on the outside of each classroom door that they adopt throughout the school year. 

Donations can be dropped off at the Henning School district office, or mailed back to the school. Wiese and Quammen are hoping to get the lists finalized by September 30, if possible, so the items can be purchased and used for the entire school year.
