Hanging basket, beekeeping classes to get local residents ready for spring

The Henning Community Education department will be hosting a number of upcoming classes. For more information, or to register, contact the Henning Public School at 583-2927, ext. 8000 for more information or to register for these upcoming Community Education classes.

Summer Recreation and Summer Swimming Lesson registration forms are available at the Henning Public School District Office. Summer Swimming lessons will run from June 6-16 and Summer Recreation will run from June 8-July 15.  Contact the Henning Public School at 583-2927 for more information. Registration deadline is May 6.

Herb garden starter class: Examine uses, benefits, preservation methods and herbal combinations. Discover how extensively useful your herb garden can be from cocktails to cooking to apothecary. Class includes herb garden starter. Class is scheduled for Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Henning Public School. The class fee is $12 (includes supplies).  Registration deadline is May 9.  

Hanging basket and plant pot tips and tricks: Learn techniques for bigger, better, longer lasting plants from local Henning greenhouse owners Matt and Cathy Goeden. For those that would like to, there will be an opportunity to plant something up at class.  Plants will be available for purchase at a discounted rate.  Please note this class will be held at Goeden’s Greenhouse at 203 Inman Street, Henning.  The class is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17 at 6 p.m. Class fee is $5 (does not include plants).  Registration deadline is May 10.  

Honey bees and beekeeping: Learn about the hobby of honey bees and beekeeping from Lewis Struthers, an apiarist (beekeeper).  He will discuss how honey is made from the bee to the jar, including collecting honey, pollination, life cycle, interesting instincts and characteristics, how bees organize their society, and how to get a beehive started. He will also discuss management of the hive throughout the year which includes the what, why and when of hive care.  Dr. Struthers will bring honey samples to taste-test. The class is scheduled for Thursday, May 5 from 7-9 p.m. at the Henning Public School. Class fee is $5.00.  Registration deadline is April 28.

Township history: The second Tuesday in March is the official date for township elections and Otter Tail County has 62 of them. What is a township? What township do you live in and how did it get its name? Join Missy Hermes from the Otter Tail County Historical Society to find out some fun facts about the many townships including which ones are named after Civil War veterans and which ones were named by Native Americans. The Civil War Museum kit will be available for people to view.  Participants can make their own township craft and take home a map.  Make this a fun family event or grandparent/grandchild time!  Children in 3rd grade and up are welcome to attend on their own. The class is scheduled for Thursday, May 19 from 6-7 p.m. at the Henning Public School. The class fee is $5/person or $10/family (please indicate when registering how many will attend).  Registration deadline is May 12.  

Paper crafting with the circut cutting machine for the beginner: Learn about different tips, tricks and hacks that will help you when crafting with your cricut.  You will learn how to create gift tags, greeting cards, and stickers.  You will take home some greeting cards, gift tags, and stickers that you created and made in the class.  Contact the Henning Public School for a list of supplies you need to bring to class. The class is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Henning Public School. Registration deadline is May 5.
