Wrestlers to open section tournament on Tuesday

The Otter Tail Central Bulldogs headed north to Fosston on Tuesday for two duals with Fosston/Bagley and Park Rapids Area last week. The Bulldogs wrestled well, but came up a little bit short in both duals.  

The wrestlers started off the night with the hosts Fosston/Bagley.  The dual was back and forth the whole night, but eventually the Brawlers ended up winning 38-31. The highlight of the dual saw Jaxon Rich gain his 50th career victory when he pinned Russ Syverson.  

The second dual of the night saw the Bulldogs face off against the Panthers of Park Rapids Area. The dual started off strong for the Panthers as they got pins in the first 5 matches, putting them up 30-0.  The Bulldogs came storming right back by getting four pins in a row themselves, making the score 30-24.  

Then at 170 lbs., the Panthers were able to gain another pin widening the gap to 36-24.  Then at 182 lbs., both teams sent out eighth graders in what might have been the pivotal match of the dual. After a back and forth match, the Panthers gained the pin and took the lead 42-24.  

The Bulldogs received forfeits at both 195 lbs. and 220 lbs., which made the score 42-36 heading into the final match of the night. Because of the forfeits earlier, if the Bulldogs could secure the pin at heavyweight, they would tie the score and win by criteria.  

“Both teams knew what was on the line going into the final match. Our heavyweight knew he had to get the pin for us to win and their heavyweight knew that he had to stay off his back for their team to win,” said coach Jason Rogers.  

Kale Rich did everything in his power to try and turn his guy, but in the end he ended up with an 11-0 victory and the Bulldogs came up just a bit short 42-40.
