Henning to participate in Breakdown tournament in Perham on Saturday

The Henning girls basketball team had a pair of Park Region Conference games last week as they traveled to Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday and then hosted New York Mills on Friday night.

Tuesday at Wadena-Deer Creek 63-57 loss

On Tuesday the Hornets headed over to Wadena-Deer Creek to take on the Wolverines.

This was a game Henning knew would be a battle as Wadena-Deer Creek plays very solid defense and the Hornets ran into them on a night when they shot the ball extremely well. Unfortunately Henning struggled shooting overall as a team, with one player having an extremely good offensive night.

Alivia Gunderson looks for an open teammate during Friday’s 51-48 win over New York Mills.

Henning trailed Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 28-26 at halftime.  In the second half the Hornets were able to come out and build a lead, but the Wolverines got hot from the 3-point line and in the paint. Ultimately the Hornets lost by the final score of 63-57.

Offensively, sophomore Lyvia Misegades had her career best night so far as she finished with a game high 36 points on 14-23 shooting including 3-5 from 3-point range. She was also 5-7 from the free throw line.  Faith Fisher just missed double-figures as she finished with 9 points, while Ally Hart 5 points, Lily Fraki 4 points and Natalie Eckhoff 3 points rounded out Henning’s scoring.

Misegades also led the team in rebounding by finishing with 8 boards with Hart grabbing 6. Fisher led the team with 4 assists and 2 steals.

Friday vs. New York

Mills 51-48 win

On Friday night Henning hosted New York Mills in another PRC game. The Eagles are a team with a bunch of experience back and are scrappy.

The Hornets were able to get out to a solid start defensively, but had a ton of turnovers that led to some easy baskets for them and held a 22-16 lead at halftime. In the second half, the Hornets again had way too many turnovers and they started to pound the ball inside. Henning struggled defensively, but held on for the 51-48 victory.

Individually the Hornets were led offensively by Faith Fisher with 18 points and Ally Hart with 13 points. Lyvia Misegades and Lily Fraki just missed joining them in double-figures with 9 and 8 points respectively.  Rounding out the scoring was Natalie Eckhoff with 3 points.

Misegades led the team with 7 rebounds followed by Eckhoff with 6 rebounds. Fisher led the team with 4 steals followed by Fraki with 3 steals.

These two games brings Henning’s overall record to 7-3 on the season and 3-2 in the Park Region Conference.  This coming week the Hornets have a real tough game on Monday as they travel to West Central Area, one of the top AA teams in the area, then Thursday they host Verndale in a PRC game. On Saturday the Hornets will travel to Perham to take on a real solid Hawley team in the Breakdown event in Perham.
