Lyvia Misegades drives to the basket during a recent game in Henning. The Henning sophomore had a pair of double-doubles last week against Sebeka and Rothsay.

The varsity girls basketball team played two games last week.

On Tuesday night the Hornets hosted the Sebeka Trojans in a Park Region Conference game. On Thursday night the Hornets hosted Rothsay in a game against a section opponent.  The girls battled in both games and came away with a pair of victories to improve their record to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Park Region Conference.

Tuesday vs.

Sebeka 67-45 win

On Tuesday night the Hornets hosted conference opponent Sebeka and came out strong by building a nice 31-18 lead at halftime.  Going into the game the team knew Sebeka was always a scrappy hard-working team so the Hornets weren’t going to take anything for granted. Henning continued to push in the second half and were able to come away with a nice 67-45 win.

Head coach Mike Hepola said it was a really nice team win in which Henning shot the ball well as they waited to take good shots and finished shooting 48.1 percent for the game from the field and 71.4 percent (10/14) from the free throw line.

It was another nice game with three girls in double-figures and a fourth just missing out with 9 points.

Lyvia Miseagades and Ally Hart led the way offensively with 19 points each with Faith Fisher joining them in double-figures with 14 points. Lily Fraki finished with 9 points, while Natalie Eckhoff and Alyvia Gunderson rounded out the scoring with 3 points each.

Misegades finished the night with a double-double as she pulled down a team leading 10 rebounds to go with those 19 points and Fraki finished with 8 rebounds.

Fisher did a great job getting the ball to the open person finishing with an impressive 7 assists, while her and Hart both led the team with 2 steals each.

Thursday vs. Rothsay 54-50 win

On Thursday night the Hornets hosted the Rothsay Tigers and came out decent in the first half as Henning was able to build a 33-21 lead. But in the second half a combination of some hot shooting from Rothsay, some defensive miscues and some offensive struggles for Henning made the game a very close contest late. Fortunately the Hornets were able to pull out a 54-50 win.

The Hornets once again had three players in double digits with Ally Hart leading the team with 21 points. She was followed by Lily Fraki and Lyvia Misegades with 11 points each.

Faith Fisher finished with 8 points, while Alivia Gunderson chipped in 3 points to wrap up the scoring.

Misegades had her second consecutive double-double as she led the team with 10 rebounds followed by Hart with 7. Fisher once again did a great job of distributing the ball finishing with 6 assists to lead the team, while Hart added 3 assists. Hart also led the team with 3 steals on the night.

The pair of wins brings Henning’s record to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

This week we travel to Brandon-Evansville for Henning’s last game prior to Christmas break.

Head coach Mike Hepola said he is proud of the group as they continue to work to get better as they don’t have a ton of varsity level experience coming back from last year.  He also thanked everyone for their support and wished everyone a Merry Christmas on behalf of all of the coaches and the team.
