Henning to host NYM on Thursday

The Henning Hornets improved their overall record to 15-8 and are now 5-0 in the Park Region Conference after their games last week.

The Hornets traveled to Pillager on Thursday and defeated the Huskies 3-0 (25-15, 25-19 and 25-12).

Ally Hart led the team as she had 13 kills, 12 digs and was 17/17 serving with 2 aces. Grace Hammer had 10 kills and Emma Severson added 7. Lyvia Misegades led in assists with 28. Faith Fisher had 11 digs and was 6/6 serving.

On Saturday, the Hornets participated in the Perham tournament. The Hornets were in a 3-team pool.

In their first game of the day, the Hornets faced Fosston. Henning started on fire as they controlled the first set from start to finish.  However, in the second and third set Fosston started serving aggressively and their hitters started attacking more and the Hornets struggled to get their offense going.

The Hornets ended up losing the next to sets in close games (25-12, 21-25, 13-15).

Henning’s next opponent was Pierz. In this game, the Hornets played very well. Their great passing led to an aggressive offensive. This helped them to defeat Pierz 2-0 (25-15, 25-15).

After pool play, the Hornets ended up in the Gold Division Tournament. Henning’s first opponent was Melrose. Again, the Hornets passing was very good as they defeated Melrose 2-0 (25-11, 25-17).

With the win, Henning advanced to take on the Class AA top ranked Sauk Centre Mainstreeters (22-0). The Hornets gave it their all in this game, but came up short (25-23, 25-17).

Head coach Kristy Finck said this was a great tournament as the Hornets got to see some tough competition and improved on the day. She said if the Hornets can continue to play as they did against Sauk Centre they can beat anyone.  It was a good day of volleyball.

As a team, the Hornets served 93 percent with 17 aces. Henning had 109 kills, hitting at .152.  In blocking, the Hornets had 11 solo blocks. They serve received 88 percent to target, while digging was 75 percent.

Grace Hammer and Ally Hart led the team as they had 29 and 28 kills on the day. Hart also had some very good defense, getting 52 digs on the day. Emma Severson had 21 kills and led the team in hitting percentage at .245. Becca Frederick had 12 kills and Lily Fraki and Lyvia Misegades each had 8. Misegades led the team in assists with 95 and she led the team in solo blocks with 4. Faith Fisher led the team in digs with 59 and she went 29/29 serving with 2 aces.  Gretchen Eckhoff, 28/29 led the team in ace serves with 5.

The Hornets have two regular season games this week. Monday is a home game against Battle Lake and Thursday they will host PRC rival New York Mills who is also 5-0 in the PRC.
