0Meeting set for Oct. 11 in Vining
Tim Peterson is a traveler and a descendant of Norwegian emigrants settling in Battle Lake Area in 1884. His great grandfather traveled from Vang i Valdes, Norway, at age 16. Now, generations later, Peterson has traveled to Norway 13 times. He will share his experiences of travel and contrast the customs and life of the Norwegians and Americans at a program in which the community is invited—free of charge.
Peterson will be the featured speaker Monday, Oct. 11, in Vining at the Leif Erikson, Sons of Norway monthly cultural program. The public is invited and there is no charge. Refreshments will be served. The gathering will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Vining Community Center, 211 Soule St, the former elementary school.
Peterson has traveled to Norway the 13 times for numerous reasons—with the military, with family, for business and most recently he was the interim pastor at the American Lutheran Church in Oslo where the services are in English. Previous to that he was the interim pastor in Minneapolis at the Norwegian Lutheran Church, Mindekirken, where he preached in Norwegian.
At this time Peterson is the executive director of Mount Carmel Ministries including the camp on Lake Carlos. The couple live there near the camp.
Leif Erikson presents programs monthly, usually the second Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Vining Community Center, 211 Soule St, Vining. The evening is open for guests and anyone interested in the culture and customs of Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Sweden.
Leif Erikson, Sons of Norway, is an international organization for women, men and youth, which promotes the present culture of the five Nordic countries and historically understanding the life from Viking times, through Immigration and their involvement in the World Wars I and II til present days. Along with history the group promotes interests in Nordic cultural skills including music, dance, literature, rosemaling, Hardanger lace, physical exercise including bikings, swimming, skiing, skating and walking for healthy living. Speakers, programs, workshops and individual study are means by which we encourage the study of these skills and more.
