Henning finishes season with a record of 13-5 overall

The Henning Hornets will open their sub section tournament as the third seed and will host  sixth seeded Lake Park-Audubon on Thursday night. The winner of the game will take on either second seeded New York Mills or seventh seeded Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal on Saturday night. The game will be held at the high seed teams home court. 

The top seed in the sub section was top ranked Mahnomen/Waubun, while Hillcrest was seeded fourth, Rothsay fifth, Park Christian eighth and Underwood ninth.

The Hornets ended the regular season with a record of 13-5 overall and 9-4 in the Park Region Conference. Henning finished as the runner up in the Park Region Conference, trailing just New York Mills who finished with a conference record of 12-1. 

Tuesday

In a game that will be talked about long after the season ends, Henning defeated Wadena-Deer Creek by a score of 80-75 in triple overtime on Tuesday night.

The Hornets led by a score of 28-24 at halftime and ended regulation tied at a score of 57-57 after seventh grader Kale Misegades hit a 3-pointer to send the game into overtime. It was the first of two times the Hornets hit a shot late in the game to keep Henning alive. 

“Twice we had to score to extend the game and both times we made the plays to get it done,” said head coach Randy Misegades. “Kale Misegades made a huge 3 to send us into the first overtime. After the Wolverines hit a 3 to force a second overtime, Tyson Misegades made a runner at the buzzer to extend the game to a third extra session.” 

The teams scored 8 points in the first overtime, 7 in the second overtime and the Hornets outscored the Wolverines by a margin of 8-3 in the third overtime to come away with the tough win. The Hornets found themselves down by double-digits in the second half, before making a late charge to come away with the win.

“Tremendous effort by our guys tonight. We never quit after trailing by 11 in the second half. We just battled and made some huge plays down the stretch. Both teams made big-time shots late in the ball game,” said Misegades.

Misegades credited the effort of the entire team as they were able to dig deep and finish with a solid night from the field.

“Mason Hammer and Tanner Arndt scored, rebounded, and distributed the ball throughout the game. They were huge along with Joe Angell down low,” said Misegades. “We were proud of the effort and energy from Ethan Houselog and Calvin Stueve as well. Without those guys we don’t win the game.”

Hammer had a huge night from the field as the sophomore finished with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 assists. Tyson Misegades hit four 3-pointers to finished with 19 points, while Arndt scored 16 points and 7 assist, while Angell scored 12 points off of just 6-7 shooting and Kale Misegades rounded out the scoring with 10 points.

Friday

Henning overcame a 36-35 halftime deficit with a strong second half to edge Verndale 61-58 on Friday night. The win ended Henning’s conference portion of its schedule with a record of 9-4, as they outlasted a tough Pirate team.

“We knew this would be another knock-down, drag-out battle and it proved to be exactly that. Brandon Greenwaldt had his way in the paint and scored 24 points for the Pirates. We competed better on the defensive end in the second half and found a way to win,” said head coach Randy Misegades.

As part of Friday’s game, the Hornets honored its two seniors in Joe Angell and Ethan Houselog.

“We honored our two seniors tonight. Joe Angell and Ethan Houselog have given many years to our program and have been part of many great memories. They have been great leaders and role models and will be missed,” said Misegades.

The Hornets shot 50 percent from the field as a team and were led offensively by Mason Hammer with 20 points and hit all three 3-pointers he took in the game. Tanner Arndt finished with 18 points off of 6-7 shooting and had 7 assists. Tyson Misegades just missed out in joining them in double-figures with 9 points and 5 assists.

Saturday

Henning wrapped up its regular season with a commanding 78-46 win over Underwood on Saturday. The win brings Henning’s record to 13-5 on the season as the team filled with underclassmen ended its season with one of their best nights from the field. 

The Hornets took a 38-24 lead at halftime behind a hot night of shooting. Henning finished an impressive 51 percent from the floor and 7-18 from behind the 3-point line, and continued to find success from the field in the second half. 

Less-than 24 hours after the Hornets wrapped up their Park Region Conference schedule against Verndale, head coach Randy Misegades said the team came out a bit slow in the first half of the game, but was able to force a number of Rocket turnovers throughout the game.

“We were a bit sloppy and sluggish all day, but we were able to create some turnovers and get out in transition to extend the lead in the second half,” he said. “Finishing 13-5 in the regular season was a nice accomplishment for our team. We are excited to host a playoff game Thursday night.”

Tanner Arndt led the way offensively with 21 points, off of 7-11 shooting from the field. He also had 5 assists, 6 rebounds and 6 steals. Mason Hammer scored 19 points, while Tyson Misegades finished with 16 points and 6 steals. Kale Misegades also reached double-figures with 10 points. 

Calvin Stueve scored 5 points and led the team with 8 assists in the win.
