0Henning to travel to undefeated Menahga on Thursday night
at Verndale Jan. 19 76-16 win
The Hornet girls basketball team had two Park Region Conference games this past week.
On Tuesday night the Hornets traveled to Verndale to take on the Pirates.
Verndale was, unfortunately for them, missing a couple girls including their best player, so we wanted to get off to a good start to try and dictate the game early. That definitely was the case as the Hornets were able to jump out to a 39-2 lead at halftime.
Henning was able to work on a few different line-ups and offensive and defensive sets, which will hopefully help the team in future games. The second half the Hornets played their starters for the first few minutes and then got their bench involved. The reserves were able to continue the good play and were able to have 10 different players score in the game as Henning ended up winning by the final score of 76-16.
Individually, the Hornets were led offensively by senior Kylie Frederick who finished with 20 points and she was joined in double-figures by fellow senior Ellie Dague with 19 points. Megan Weber finished the night with 8 points, including two 3-point field goals.
Sophomore guards Faith Fisher and Ally Hart both scored 6 points in the game and continued to show tremendous upside along with fellow sophomore guard Becca Frederick who finished with 5 points.
Senior reserves Katherine Hansen and Makena Kenyon both had 4 points and post players Megan Rinicker and Grace Hammer each finished with 2 points on the night.
Fisher did a great job of running the offense and finished the game with a team high 5 assists. Dague, Weber and Ally Hart all had 4 assists each as well, showing the good team effort.
Dague just missed the double-double finishing with a team high 9 rebounds, while Weber and Grace Hammer each grabbed 6 boards. Dague also led the team with 4 steals with Fisher and Frederick each finishing with 3 each.
vs. Bertha 1-22-21 Win 70-14
On Friday night the Hornets hosted the Bertha-Hewitt Bears in their first home game of the season.
Bertha-Hewitt has a pretty young squad this year and Henning was able to jump out to another nice start as we held a 43-12 halftime lead. In the second half Henning’s half court defense with all 11 girls playing was able to hold them to two points to win by the final score of 70-14.
Offensively the Hornets had nine different girls score and three players in double-figures led by Dague with 25 points and then both Weber and Hart with 10 points each. Frederick had 7 points and Fisher and Becca Frederick both finished with 6 points each. Hammer 4 points, Rinicker 1 and Hansen 1 rounded out our scoring for the night.
Rinicker and Hammer led the team in rebounding with 7 boards each followed by Dague with 6. Fisher and Dague both finished with 6 steals to lead the team while Kylie was right behind with 5. Frederick and Weber had a team high 4 assists followed by Fisher with 3 assists.
Head Coach Mike Hepola said it was another nice win and opportunity to see everyone out on the court here early in the season.
The two wins bring Henning to 3-1 overall and 3-0 in the Park Region Conference. This coming week the Hornets have two really tough games against undefeated opponents as the team will host Perham in Henning on Tuesday and then travel to Menahga on Thursday for a big conference showdown with both teams undefeated so far in the conference.
