With just eight people dressed for the varsity game, Henning was able to stay with a powerful New York Mills team for the opening half of action on Friday night. Unfortunately, the Hornets got in a bit of foul trouble late and were unable to stave off a deep Eagles team in the second half as they fell 77-52.

“Great measuring stick for our team against one of the top teams in Section 6. And we were so excited to be back on the floor,” said Head Coach Randy Misegades.

The Hornets trailed by a score of 37-31 at the end of the first half, but shot just 28 percent from the field and three players had at least four fouls in the game. As a team the Hornets shot 93 percent from the free throw line.

Junior Tanner Arndt led the way for the Hornets with 19 points and 3 assists. Senior post player Joe Angell scored 12 points and sophomore Tyson Misegades also reached double figures with 10 points. Angell secured 8 points in the loss.

Despite the loss, Misegades said he was pleased by how the team played in its regular season opener.

“We were happy with how hard our kids played. We just need to do a better job of rebounding and staying out of foul trouble. We also shot the ball poorly,” he said. “It looked like a typical opening game.”

This week the Hornets will host Rothsay in a non-conference game on Tuesday before traveling to Bertha-Hewitt on Thursday night.
