The Ottertail Lions Club donated $1,500 to the Henning Public Library Pages for a Purpose book campaign. Inside the jacket cover of each book that we purchase with the Ottertail Lions Club money will be a sticker with their name on it showing that the book was purchased with their funds.
The Henning Public Library is very grateful to the Ottertail Lions for partnering with the library to improve our outdated nonfiction and fiction books. The mission of the Pages for a Purpose book campaign is to replace aged fiction and non-fiction books in the Henning Public School/Community Library.
Currently, 46 percent of the Henning library resources are non-fiction with an average book publication date of 1990. This makes the average non-fiction book in the Henning library 32-years-old. Fiction books in the library circulation are newer, but because they are paperbacks, many are worn out. New, hardcover books cost approximately $19-26. Any contributions allow the library to add updated, high-quality, interesting books.
The library wants its students/community members to be able to master reading to the extent needed to realize their full potential throughout developmental years and beyond. They also want them to know about the wonderful benefits of living in a rural community such as Henning, Vining, Urbank, and Ottertail.
In October 2022, a fundraising campaign to raise $100,000 for this project which would allow the library to replace approximately 25 percent of its outdated books and purchase approximately $5,000 for slat wall shelving for display.
So far, the library has raised approximately $30,000 toward this goal in cash and book donation grants. Contributors have been the Ottertail Lions Club, Park Region Telephone, Missouri River Energy, the City of Henning, a Supporting Successful Students grant from MN Department of Education, the DNR, the Browne Foundation of Wadena, KLN of Perham, the Henning Car Club, Otter Tail Power, Litin Paper, and Jennie O.
As evident, the library has a ways to go to meet the goal, and they realise that every dollar helps them to inch closer to the total.
