Gary and Karalyn Harrington are a husband and wife who both grew up on farms in Otter Tail County and who met each other while attending Fergus Falls Junior College, which later was known as the community college and is now part of M State.
Gary Harrington was raised on a farm near Phelps Mill and Karalyn Schulz grew up on a farm north of Fergus Falls.
They spent their working years in the Twin Cities, raising two sons, and retired to Gary’s home farm near Phelps Mill, northwest of Battle Lake. In retirement they have given back through involvement in endeavors such as economic development and other civic involvement.
They were happy to share their memories about growing up on area farms in a new book, “Farmsteads and Old Neighborhoods,” with proceeds going to the Otter Tail County Historical Society.
Those who grew up on area farms refer to working alongside family members while doing farm chores, working with animals from chickens to horses, taking the opportunities to watch sunrises and sunsets, loving country school, 4-H and friends on nearby farms.
“Farmsteads and Old Neighborhoods” is now for sale for $15 at the OTCHS (Otter Tail County Historical Society-county museum) and Lundeen’s in Fergus Falls. As mentioned, all proceeds go to the county museum. To order online, here’s the information:
